Well yeah there’s 22 people on the field at a time and you only play one side of the ball. The ring counting and championship round record is the WOAT way to judge an all time great in general, but it’s especially bad in football when you consider this. @The Dankster broke down Brady and his super bowl performances earlier in this thread and for the most part I agree. The one thing I would mention as an example is him getting them the lead in super bowl 42 with 2:42 left in the game and then the giants took the lead with 35 seconds left. Not that it excuses the meltdown New England had with the bad play calls afterwards (3 timeouts and only down 3 but they exclusively called all streaks). He didn’t have a great game, but sometimes in football your defense and even your kicker can shyt the bed at the end and cost you regardless of how you played. Look at the 1998 Vikings (
). Gary Anderson makes that kick at the end and they’re in the super bowl. Plain and simple. Maybe they win it too. Back to the Brady and super bowl conversation, just to point out the point I was referring to about all the elements out of one player’s control, look at Peyton Manning (since those two are so frequently compared) and the misfortune his teams have had in the playoffs that he could not control.
2000: against the Dolphins his kicker misses the game winner and the defense lets Miami run for over 200 yards and the game winner in overtime.
2005: against the Steelers, his kicker misses the game tying kick at the end of the game.
2007: against the chargers the defense gives up more points than it had all year, giving up the go ahead drive to a career backup with rivers out injured in the final minutes and then the colts receivers drop passes on third and fourth down with both passes beyond the first down marker.
2008: against the chargers the defense let’s them drive to kick the game tying field goal at the buzzer and then gives up a score on the opening possession of overtime. Manning leaves the field ahead 3 with maybe a minute left and they lose without him putting his helmet on again.
2010: against the jets he drives them down the field for a go ahead field goal with 50 seconds left. The jets end up kicking the game winner at the buzzer.
2012: the broncos give a 70 yard Hail Mary with 40 seconds left to force overtime and in overtime fail to get a stop on a third and 15 with the ravens backed up inside their own 15, which would have guaranteed them good field position to kick the game winner.
That right there is why win loss record is an inherently stupid argument. Way too many things that happen outside of an individual players control.
Tom Brady just started a Super Bowl 17 years after his first Pro Bowl.
Montana had 13 seasons between first Pro Bowl and last one.
Peyton won a Super Bowl 15 years after his first Pro Bowl.
Your "narrow window" argument makes no sense in this context.
The second point you make is true, but the general idea is still more than true enough for bball too. No one can do everything. Duncan and Magic had a team that could compete from the beginning of their career to the end, MJ and Kareem each had one long second-half stretch, Lebron and Hakeem got even shorter stretches. Anyone seriously blaming 1987 Jordan, 1991 Hakeem, or 2007 Lebron for not winning a title those years considering the team and coaching around them.
