Edit: I will also say Russ's overzealous god worship can be off putting, while cam clearly believes in god and thanks him, he doesn't come across as a Bible thumper. Millennials are less religious than other generations, so someone who leads with religion can easily be less relatable.

The answer isn't nearly as complex as you're trying to make it. Compare Cam and Russ. The way they talk, dress, mannerisms, personalities etc. Compare the way they've been portrayed in the media since college. Is it not blatantly obvious why Cam is seen as more relatable and authentic?
Not to say Russ is fake or less black, but, I feel comfortable saying you've come across far more brothers similar to Cam.
