in every civilization, for as long as history has been recorded, men have always tried to control women's sexuality and keep them subservient. why do you think that is?
was keeping women's sexuality under control necessary for the genesis of civilization?
Control reproduction, control a biological process they had no way of understanding.
Early human societies were egalitarian or matriarchal (simplifying of course). They worshipped female figures and dieties because of fertility, reproduction, nurturing, care and cohesion of family, groups, clans, tribes. Basically life giving. Success in increasing kin group, maintaining ties, passing on culture, conflict resolution...success in hunting and gathering, crop yields, domesticated animal populations were all given female attributes. Maternal worship. There are pre-historic artifacts scattered all over the world; goddesses, maternal figurines, fertility totems.
Some historians postulate that the transition happened when a drastic change in world climate brought about famines and limited resources. In response societies became more warlike and aggressive. Thus more patriarchal (in a wide sense), delineated, sexually restrictive, aggressive to outsiders and controlling of women's sexuality and access to society.
