Soros helps pro-Clinton Super PACs to $24 million haul

150701-george_soros_gty_629_956x519.jpg

American Bridge 21st Century, an opposition research super PAC founded by Clinton enforcer David Brock, raised $7.7 million — including $1 million from Soros — an official with the group said Wednesday. A linked non-profit group called American Bridge 21st Century Foundation – which is not required to disclose its donors – raised an additional $1 million, the official said.

The super PAC numbers are an encouraging development for Clinton, whose campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination announced Wednesday that it had raised $45 million during her first three months in the race.

Clinton is a fundraiser par excellence, and her ability to raise money for her own campaign was never in doubt.

The fundraising ability of the pro-Clinton super PACs, however, was less clear.

Clinton’s allies early this year had privately fretted that supportive super PACs were struggling to raise money amidst internecine squabbling and reluctance among some of the Democratic Party’swealthiest backers.

But the early fundraising details from Priorities and American Bridge — which will be fleshed out more completely in mandatory reports due at the Federal Election Commission before a July 15 deadline — suggest some of the party’s core mega-donors are stepping up to the plate.

According to sources in Democratic finance ciricles, Priorities collected big checks from Democratic Hollywood stalwarts including DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and producer J.J. Abrams and his wife Katie McGrath, and cause donors like California investor Herb Sandler and Boston philanthropist Barbara Lee. It got some organized labor cash as well, with a check coming from the union representing plumbers and pipefitters.

Soros’s checks in particular send an important signal. The Hungarian-born investor is one of the few Democratic donors who has shown a willingness to drop eight-figures in an election cycle, having donated more than $20 million in 2004 to groups that tried to oust then-President George W. Bush. After the failure of that effort, Soros dialed back his big-money political spending, but he is still closely watched by other rich Democrats as a bellwether donor.

An adviser to Soros said his boss also gave $1 million this year to America Votes, a liberal non-profit group that mobilizes voters around issue and election campaigns. But Soros has not decided how much to donate overall in 2016, or how to divvy up his big political checks among groups, the adviser said.

The $7.7-million super PAC haul for American Bridge — which has played a key role in defending Clinton against GOP attacks — marks its largest six-month fundraising haul since the group was formed in 2011. The cash came from 55 donors, for an average contribution of $140,000, and it came at an important time in the preliminary stages of the big-money cash race.

Guy Cecil, Priorities’ chief strategist, wrote supporters Thursday morning stressing the importance of raising big money more than six months before the first nominating contests.

Hillary Wins Again
JACK SHAFER

“It may seem early to many of us, but with the amount of money pouring in from the far right wing, the time has come for our side to kick things into high gear,” Cecil wrote in an email first reported by The New York Times. “We have a lot of work to do in the months ahead, but we are starting to see some real momentum.”

The super PACs supporting Clinton’s prospective GOP rivals like former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas are raking in huge checks or commitments from their side’s billionaires. New York hedge fund manager Bob Mercer is the leading backer behind a network of pro-Cruz super PACs that boasted of raising $31 million while Miami businessman Norman Braman is considering donating as much as $25 million to a super PAC backing Rubio. Mega-donor cultivation is shaping up an essential aspect of the 2016 presidential campaign because super PACs have begun assuming some of the roles traditionally played by campaigns.

Unlike campaigns – which are limited to maximum donations of $5,400 this election cycle – super PACs can accept checks of unlimited amounts, thanks to the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United ruling and a subsequent lower court decision that struck down key political spending restrictions.

While super PACs are still barred from coordinating their spending strategies with the campaigns they’re trying to help, operatives in recent years have pioneered techniques for ensuring complementary efforts.

American Bridge 21st Century, for instance, in 2013 launched a project called Correct the Record, that has been filling many of the functions of a traditional campaign rapid-response operation, providing real-time push-back against GOP attacks on its website and via email for use by Clinton’s defenders. The group became a stand-alone super PAC in May, splitting off from American Bridge, and hinting at plans to work even more closely with Clinton’s campaign.

"I had a Sarah Palin button on backpack" Who is BLMS's Marissa "Johnson" Jenae? -
Democratic Underground

It's said that if you decide to act above reproach, you had better be above reproach. It seems that Marissa "Johnson" Jenae did not heed this warning. A photo posted by Jenae to her FB page (Linked) in which she stated "This woman has known me since high school, back when I had a Sarah Palin button on backpack....we been thru a lot."

Alone, we can surmise that she may have made a few questionable choices in her youth. OK, she was young, but Palin was a candidate for VP running against the first black president. But when I read down a little further, my benefit of the doubt limit had been reached.

"GOP shoulda groomed me right then...now they gotta see me on the other side *shrugs*"

For real? It's like that? This wasn't 8 years, or even 4 years ago. She posted that last month. So my question is, what kinda grooming would it have taken?

If you're going to accuse white liberals of racism, and target the only presidential candidate, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders with a 40 year track record of standing up for #BlackLivesMatter you might not want people to know that "I had a Sarah Palin button on my backpack" or admit that the GOP could have "groomed you more". Because now you look disingenuous at best, and an agent provocateur at worse

There was a very odd period after Hiliary lost the primary, that many of her butt hurt supporters threatened to stump for palin , in fact even after the election there was a large group of gay men who were clinton supporters ,who set up some kind of fund raising group to help palin run for president.

I wonder who may have been pulling their strings, and the above ties in with the shadowy goings on that surrounds the clintons, as well as clintons decision not to attack palin, and bill's positivity about a republican vp candidate.I have never heard Bill speak so nicely about any other republican, he didn't say one criticism despite it being a critical moment of the campaign....

Mara Willow and Marissa Janae Johnson, are members of an anarchist group called Outside Agitators 206 that has a core set of beliefs separate from the BLM movement.

Outside Agitators 206

Marissa Johnson holds extremist black nationalist views - Democratic Underground

Marissa Johnson's primary allegiance is to an an called organization, Outside Agitators 206, which believes Democrats hope to "bury Black Lives Matter under an election blitz". Bernie's specific views and history don't matter to them. They're about disrupting any Democratic campaign that will let them anywhere near the stage -- and there's only one that will.

After looking around some more, I it seems that this group's belief that police have no legitimate function is rooted in ultra-left black nationalist ideology. This is a perspective not shared by all BLM activists or PoC at large.

It is "true" that Marissa Johnson is a "real" BLM activist. She genuinely has been very active in previous Seattle BLM actions, quoted extensively in media. But she's also very young and new to activism of any kind.

But it seems that her ideology is more rooted in the extremist far-left identity politics views of "Outside Agitators 206" rather than BLM, and the significance of the views that are not those of the whole BLM movement.

My friend wrote this to me:

"Nixon had Kissinger interfere in the Paris treaty process in 68' insuring the Vietnam war continued and his victory in the election - Reagan had secret negotiations with the Iranians in order to insure hostages weren't released, so that he could defeat Jimmy Carter and have the hostages released on his inauguration. - whatever happened, the Clinton campaign is nervous about Bernie Sanders for sure."

Not that these people care, obviously, but Sanders has one of the best civil rights voting records in the Senate

PRESS RELEASE: Black Lives Matter Seattle ‪#‎BowDownBernie‬ Action

MEDIA CONTACTS: Marissa Johnson blacklivesmatterseattle@gmail.com

Black Lives Matter Seattle organizers and supporters take over Bernie Sanders’ rally at Westlake on Saturday, August 8, 2015.

Today BLM Seattle, with the support of other Black organizers and non-Black allies and accomplices, held Bernie Sanders publicly accountable for his lack of support for the Black Lives Matter movement and his blatantly silencing response to the ‪#‎SayHerName‬ ‪#‎IfIDieInPoliceCustody‬ action that took place at Netroots this year.

Bernie’s arrival in Seattle is largely significant in the context of the state of emergency Black lives are in locally as well as across America. The Seattle Police Department has been under federal consent decree for the last three years and has been continually plagued by use-of-force violations and racist scandals amongst their rank and file. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray has refused to push any reform measures for police accountability, not even the numerous recommendations of his self-appointed Community Police Commission. The Seattle School District suspends Black students at a rate six times higher than their white counterparts, feeding Black children into the school-to-prison pipeline. King County has fought hard to push through a plan to build a $210 million new youth jail to imprison these children, amid intense community criticism and dissent. The Central District, a historically Black neighborhood in Seattle, has undergone rapid gentrification over the past few decades, with Black people being displaced from the only neighborhood that we could legally live in until just years ago. While white men profit off of the legalization of marijuana, our prisons are still filled with Black people who are over-incarcerated for drug offenses.

This city is filled with white progressives, which is why Bernie Sanders’ camp was obviously expecting a friendly and consenting audience for today’s campaign visit. The problem with Sanders’, and with white Seattle progressives in general, is that they are utterly and totally useless (when not outright harmful) in terms of the fight for Black lives. While we are drowning in their liberal rhetoric, we have yet to see them support Black grassroots movements or take on any measure of risk and responsibility for ending the tyranny of white supremacy in our country and in our city. This willful passivity while claiming solidarity with the‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ movement in an effort to be relevant is over. White progressive Seattle and Bernie Sanders cannot call themselves liberals while they participate in the racist system that claims Black lives. Bernie Sanders will not continue to call himself a man of the people, while ignoring the plight of Black people. Presidential candidates will not win Black votes without putting out an explicit criminal justice reform package. As was said at the Netroots action, presidential candidates should expect to be shut down and confronted every step along the way of this presidential campaign. Black people are in a state of emergency. Lines have been drawn in the sand. You are either fighting continuously and measurably to protect Black life in America, or you are a part of the white supremacist system that we will tear down in the liberation of our people.

On this, nearly the one year anniversary of the ruthless murder of Mike Brown, we honor Black lives lost by doing the unthinkable, the unapologetic, and the unrespectable. Out of radical love for our Black brothers and sisters, we put our lives and our bodies on the line to testify to their persecution and resilience. We join together in Black love to #SayHerName and declare that #BlackLivesMatter, understanding that our love will disrupt the complicity and corruption of our anti-Black society; GOP, Democrat, and otherwise.

There is no business as usual while Black lives are lost. We will ensure this by any means necessary.

With the strength of our ancestors and for the future of our children,

Black Lives Matter Seattle Co-Founders,

Marissa Johnson and Mara Willaford.

I remember when bill said that the then senator Obama would be serving him drinks in the senate not too long ago... Or when the Palin surge happened, after Mcain appointed her his vp , and she for a time because a problem for Obama, Obama asked hiliary to attack her, Hiliary refused saying she would never be a critic of another woman {what when she tore apart that rape victim on the stand or her husband bills whores?} and later on Bill sang Palins praises whenever he could on the networks before the presidential election was over. Butt hurt no doubt that his wife had lost. Later on Hiliary postively gushed when Palin sang her praises after reading that in hils book.

Such friends of the Black Community. No wonder President Obama reportedly cannot stand her or bill.

People talking about this "exposing" the racism of white liberals forgetting how getting embarrassed by a black man on a global stage exposed the Clintons for the paternalistic southerners they've always been.

White progressive Seattle and Bernie Sanders cannot call themselves liberals while they participate in the racist system that claims Black lives.

lol are they serious? Liberals have always been participants in racism, and architects of it, dating back to the inception of racism :skip:

I simply can't take them seriously until they do this at a Hillary event. Criticism and critical support of Bernie is cool, and I agree that needs to be done, but he's not the only one running... nor is he even the frontrunner.
