both consoles have "DRM"

I do feel like piracy is the elephant in the room here, since people have these DRM discussions, but try to make it all about used games and shyt

this site sells DRM free software:

GOG.com

understand that means you download the data to install those games, and then there's nothing to stop you from installing that game on multiple machines. it's pretty much a 'honor system', and people are tripping if they think either console will have something like that. both are very closed devices, and neither wants to become the Dreamcast

Actually, you can now (select games I think).

PC brehs stay :win:.

I don't think so. from the Steam trading FAQ:

Does Steam Trading mean I can sell my used games?

No, only games that have been bought as a gift, and thus have never been played, can be traded. Once the Steam Gift is opened and added to your game library, you won’t be able to trade it again.

I don't think anyone has a problem with DRM.

But what you're talking about, is not DRM though.

wrd. Digital rights management. MS just has one way of doing it which is essentially making you install all the games and not letting them run without contacting a certain server. I think i get it.

The problem with DRM is that you buy a game for X amount of dollars...and you do not dictate when you can play, the publisher does...

So, if say, for whatever reason...microsoft wants to shut down the servers...they can...and leave you with a 65 $ hole in your pocket...

See the Simcity game release fiasco...maybe the biggest video game release fail ever...cat's had paid as much as 80 bucks for a limited edition version of a game that they could not even play for 4 or 5 days because EA didn't understand the fact that just because people did not pre-order it didn't mean they wouldn't go to a store on day 1 and pick it up...

My GF took off work for 2 days to play that game...and played it a smooth ass 0 times because the servers was done...

The sex over those two days was :whew: though...nothing like that frustrated video game female sex...all that anger and rage and pent up frustration...taken out on my genitalia :myman:

Oh. I mean I guess. Used games are great but ehhh. But I don't plan on buying any used games. Though I always do though. I don't like gamestop making soooo much middle man money while cheating consumers.

Did you respond to this statement :

"Go and try find a game on HALO 1."

If so I missed is.

because DRM in the end only harasses paying customers. the pirates usually find a way around it. so it turns into another pointless loop paying customers have to jump through.
Good point

that goes for almost any game with multiplayer though. should it be against the law to make games that won't work strictly client side? what if I know damn well what I'm getting into, and don't mind paying for something I won't 'own' for the rest of my life?

I didn't respond to it but let me respond... The Halo 1 servers were so terrible it seems like they didn't even exist. Prime example I guess. People trying to make up and predict problems that don't and wont exist... but y'all still buying cds so it doesn't matter.

Well that is the issue. SimCity was intended to be multiplayer...but you can make your own region and control all your own cities so you can play it single player.

As far as knowing what you are getting into, that is your own personal experience. This was the first time my GF ever gamed on a PC, before that she only knew the video game model of "go to walmart, buy game, put game in console, play game" and all of a sudden she is subjected to " go to walmart, buy game, install game, try to play game, servers are down game cannot be played". What do you mean I can't play it right now, I just spent 60 bucks on it...right now.

For me, I been gaming on PC for awhile so I wasn't shocked...I never cop a PC game day one, week one, hell month one...because that could potentially happen.

And it is not about owning...it is about consuming a product you paid for when you want, because you paid for it. You buy a game, you should be able to play that game at 1:00 am, 2:00 am, 3:00 am. Now if you cannot play a piece of that game at those times, so multiplayer, then that is just tough shyt...but if you cannot play the game at all, and simcity requires an online connection period...hell if you lose your online connection it smooth kicks you out the game...then that is a problem. Now the company selling you a product is also dictating how you will use that product and when you will use that product...and they reserve the right to shut down whatever service is tied to you using that product whenever the hell they want...simcity isn't selling like we thought it was? boom pull the plug on the servers, since it cost more to keep them running than we made on the game...you think it is fair for those people who are still playing the game to not be able to..at all?

they really fuct up with Simcity by requiring online, but not being ready with the servers. there also seemed to be some dubious claims as to why it was required to be online. that's a big issues here: is the online aspect really required so the game will work, or just DRM?

but my point was more about these concepts of what it means to 'own' a game, and be able to play it 10 years from now. it's inherent in the structure of some of these games that that won't be possible. this goes back to what I said in another thread about people wanting to have their cake and eat it. people want these open-world, persistent, mmo-type games, but they expect the hardware to work like an NES

lets say that game "Division" is as good as it looks, and right away they let you know "you pay $60 for the game, but you'll only be able to play for 1 year"

(I think they'll support the game longer than that. I just wanted a more extreme example. lets leave all other circumstances out as well, like not buying on launch)

would you pay the $60?
