Why is Goff's demotion to 3rd string not a bigger story?

McNabb sat behind Doug Pederson as a rookie at first. It was understood at first that Wentz was going to sit and it was ignored. It's really a nothing story
Andy Reid signed Doug Pederson to start that season and help McNabb since he came from Green Bay. They signed him to a 3 year deal.

Fisher kept McNair on the bench early in his career too and that worked out pretty well. Goff might wind up being a bust, but it's too early to bury him because he's not starting week one as a rookie.
That was NFL 1995. It was acceptable back then. Not today.

the NFL is just protecting their new franchise in LA. any backlash or bad PR this early would discourage fans and get the franchise to a bad start.

now i have no problem with sitting a #1 pick but goff looked like a prospect that needed a lot of time for development with a ceiling of matt ryan and after watching hard knocks and the pre-season, he might be a level lower than matt ryan.

this was a desperate move to have a "face" of the team player after moving to LA rather than a football decision. they probably realized they fukked up at this point.

Best believe if Jameis Winston started 3rd string last year. It would have been a big headline story.

Hell they were calling dude a bust after his 1st game last season :mjlol:
to be fair to Goff. Winston had a lot of controversy surrounding him due to that bogus rape claim by the girl. So, he was already getting a lot of heat no matter what. But regardless, not a good look for Goff.

No one thought the number one draft pick at QB would be a franchise QB?

theres levels. Nobody touted this guy as a Luck level talent. It was thought of to be a weak qb class

Teams needing a qb will always reach for a qb at the top of the draft even if there isn't a no brainer

I didn't tout Goff as a Luck level talent (which we are still waiting for from Luck himself, but that's another thread).

My point was you don't do what the Rams did to acquire a guy who isn't a franchise QB. All the draft pundits were calling him a franchise QB also. To say no one saw him as that, even if you remove the Rams, is a lie.

fwiw

Jared Goff (California)

Mean Projection in Years 3-5: 1,211 DYAR
Bust (< 500 DYAR) 28.3%
Adequate Starter (500-1499 DYAR) 34.1%
Upper Tier (1500-2500 DYAR) 23.5%
Elite (>2500 DYAR) 14.2%

While Goff is not a sure thing, his estimated chances of succeeding in the NFL are only a little bit lower than Marcus Mariota's, QBASE's favorite prospect from the 2015 draft. Goff had the kind of numbers in his final collegiate season (64.5 percent completion rate, 8.9 YPA, 43 TD, 13 INT) that successful NFL quarterbacks usually have. He posted those numbers against a good, but not great, set of defenses (ranked No. 30 in college football by our estimates). He had little help in terms of NFL-caliber talent at receiver or on the offensive line. The only teammate at those positions who projects to be drafted in the first four rounds this year or next is potential third-round receiver Kenny Lawler.

Goff becomes QBASE's No. 9 quarterback prospect of the last 21 years. Mariota occupied that same spot last year, but has moved up in the reshuffling since another year of data has been added to the model.

The Weird Side
No qb regardless of where he is drafted should start day one, give them time so when they are ready they can take over the team. That being said, its crazy hes third string.....should be the clear back up

Really shows how over valued QBs are. Goff wasn't worth a king's ransom, nor was Wentz the second best player in the draft. I'd rather take a great player or trade down than waste a shot on a guy who isn't smart and can't out perform backups.

But the thing is, the only reason the Rams took Goff #1 over Wentz was because he was supposed to be the 'more pro ready to start QB' out of the two.. or so they thought:francis:The narrative all pre draft was "Goff is ready to start right now and Wentz might need to sit for a season". The sh*t is opposite:wow:

Of course Goff shouldn't have gone #1 but your post is on the 20/20 hindsight side of things
