The answer's really #2 . PETA and groups like that are small, but they're a LOUD, in-your-face minority. They have an agenda to push on that topic. No group has an anti-murder agenda they need to promote on Aaron Hernandez.

PETA and pet lovers as has already been mentioned. Also, shyt like Twitter and Instagram wasn't big back in '07. Back then people would joke about shyt on Facebook, but it's not until lately that you'd see a meme for any and everything mere minutes after it happened. Nowadays there will always be a sizable portion of the population that's making jokes about shyt for social media attention. With the Vick shyt there were people making corny who let the dogs out jokes and shyt like that, it just didn't get around as quickly or as far.

I don't think its a race thing, just Vick had a bigger status, so his fall from grace is more noteworthy.
Spoiled whores like Paris Hilton has murdered so many of those little toy dogs that it became a running gag, even South Park parodied it. No real outrage from PETA or pet owners like the way Vick was demonized, so there's more to it than just the pet thing.
Hernandez is getting less hate than that Zimmerman guy too and both cases are similar in tone (hispanic guy that 'looks' white kills black guy in cold blood seemingly for no reason). It's funny how the media pick and chooses when society should be outraged.
