But THATS NOT SELLING OUT. Selling out is kind of a myth in hip hop. Selling out is what lame backpack fans say when their favorite artists finds a new strategy or method and subject matter to discuss. People are soooo difficult to adapt i notice. I just digged up You Owe Me. Noone can tell me that song wasnt fire and that was viewed as Nas "selling out" My question for all of you lame elitist backpack chewstick fans, why would you want your favorite rapper to rap the same if it is a detriment to his success? And why would you want your favorite rapper to rap about things he isnt around anymore? You want Nas to rap about the hood and street shyt when he's a rich rapper traveling the world not seeing any hood shyt he saw before? Then that means all in all that your selfish and control freaks who think the world should revolve around what you think is best when you dont even know shyt. Nas didnt sell out, Jay didnt sell out, Kanye didnt sell out, LET IT GOOO. A true fan will like their fave artist whether they rap about sand or salads. As long as the lyricism stays why does it matter what they talk about? You nikkas want Jadakiss ass rappers and not even realize Jadakiss hardly eats anymore. nikka had to go back to a corner in Yonkers to eat. WHy would any rapper want that? So they can look "real" to their fans? Real dont pay the bills.

Didn't say it was my opinion, just said that was a well-documented opinion. It's a double edged sword with Nas more than with anyone else, because like I said, that cloud of 'Illmatic' has done him some harm when it's come to moving on with his life and career. To THIS DAY, there's people who'll pitch a fit over him not working with Pete Rock or Premo anymore. In some ways, he's probably been the most criticized rapper ever- not that he hasn't made some shyt worthy of criticism, but he catches it from all sides. If a lot of his fans and critics had it their way, he'd have gone his whole career making 'Illmatic' over and over, and he'd probably be on Duck Down Records selling 7000 copies right now.

I'm surprised people are complaining about Kanye's latest stuff (WTT, Mercy, etc). He's been getting more and more back to "regular" hip hop lately. Dark Fantasy had some pop elements but let's not forget it was a dark album that was pretty damn hip hop. Lyrically he wasn't selling out on that album by any stretch of the imagination. The nikka was sonning white people left and white - and they still gave him near perfect reviews. That's how good it was :whoo:

WTT features a lot of house sensibilities, even some dubstep. Kanye has been focusing on "new" songs for awhile so that's nothing new. College Dropout was standard soul loops, but LR was completely orchestrated in a way no one was doing. But Graduation was house and rather Euro-based and Kanye's been on that tip since; as that music evolves, Kanye introduces it to hip hop. I see nothing wrong with that IF the music produced is good. Personally I didn't like Graduation, and I'm ehhh on WTT. But I think Mercy is dope as hell.

Read like five responses so I may repeat shyt.....

He never sold out cause he always done whatever he wanted and evolved as an artist

He was still half broke on College Dropout and was clearly heavily influenced, hip hop wise, by Common Tribe and all that but also RZA

His sound has changed cause his career changed and he always wanted to be the best ever and he's working towards that, but proving he can do whatever he wants and make it sound dope

Lyrically, he's grown. From punchline filled verses to actual full verses. Don't get me wrong, a verse full of punchlines is dope, but you can't make 5 albums of that or else people stop listening. He wanted to be the best so he started crafting true verses and songs and created hits along with hidden gems since every album is solid basically from start to finish (Gorgeous is one of the best lyrically brilliant tracks ever, hidden on an album full of hits)

Nas sold out cause he went from "Street's Disiciple" to "Escobar"....Kanye never had a personality change, he been arrogant since day one. His music has changed not to fit a style but to create whatever style he wants, or wants to take and do better than anyone else (808s and Heartbreak)

Aight I'm done rambling....:yeshrug:

Can you imagine this lost ass nikka trying to perform songs off CD or LR now..

No really imagine this Molly popping diva trying to perform Drug Dealing off CD, shyt wouldn't even look right.

Better yet if Def Poetry was still around imagine him trying to take the stage now. He's a fukking zombie. Pure Shadow of himself and his fans are literally chalking it up to " he always did what he wanted to do"

Remember how ill Diamonds from Sierra Lione was ? Remember how ill crack music was? ( Molly poppin fakkit)

Wake up Kanye (Bernie MAC voice + Violin in the background )

Nas was boxed in from Illmatic as being the underground street dude in the 90s, so when he "sold out" he caught heat from it from heads as rappers during that era would

Kanye from the jump was always seen as slightly alternative even when making music within the lane of black music. So I guess they give him more rope.

More rope and he's certainly making himself look like a fool. nikkas wanted him to ourself Curly for a reason. Everything he represented was hip hop.

Now his music is microwaved bull shyt. With that Adlib..

I don't think Kanye sold out in terms of content. But dude literally made a wack ass R&B autotune album at the height of his career and was praised by critics for it. That's still amazing to me.

Sometimes I think critics want you to fall so they praise you at your weakest moment.

Where was the praise when he got at George Bush?

Where was the praise for Diamonds From Sieara Lione?

Where was the praise for Flashing Lights?

His content isn't anywhere near as creative as it used to be. He clearly doesn't give a fukk now. Even the artists on his label have no connection to him.

The original good music team were connected to him in some way. A genuine connecition and it played a role in the art he created.

Leave that mercy shyt to 2chainz
Leave that H.a.m shyt for Rozay
Leave that autotune shyt to T.Pain and Cudi

We want that Chi town, soulful, ye you crazy for this one shyt
