Speed without the ball doesn't even begin to tell the whole story about being a soccer player, that's why you hardly hear anyone mentioning those stats offhand. A team can cover a speedster efficiently by their defensive shape like what Atletico Madrid does to Bale in many games. Ball control under pressure and at a high speed is a top level skill many players do not possess. It is easier if you have oceans of space behind the defense but in tight spaces it is a different story. The type of running depends on the position, strikers and wingers will run less but usually at higher speed than midfielders who are in constant motion. And with all due respect to some posters, playing soccer against other Americans is not exactly top level and doesn't give as much appreciation of what the game is about. It may look easier because of the level you are playing at. Henry's goal is a good example. The other ones that come to mind are

Kaka's run against Argentina

ESPN sports science analysis of Messi's goal against Bilbao

fukk this loser messi you wanna see jaw dropping goal right here from the GAWD

Hockey is popular in Canada and Eastern Europe, Baseball is popular in Latin America and parts of Asia, while American Football is only popular in the US and nowhere else. You may have talked to some Brits that like the sport, but think about this, are there any British NFL players that were born, bred and raised in a Euro feeder system?

Nah breh, it's too expensive, one of the reasons why basketball is surging is all you need is a ball and hoop

That is one of the major reasons why soccer is the worlds top sport, all you need is a ball and nothing else. Football is cost prohibitive and it requires too many people to play, you can't play it by yourself like you can with other sports.
Kids who cant even afford a ball play with cans :ohlawd:. Americans would nver understand the love fot the game

American football athletes are far better athletes than soccer players. Ironically American football athletes participate in the Olympics intermittently whereas soccer players never do. :laff: @ soccer endurance runners being "Olympians". Cristiano Ronaldo couldn't even beat a normal sprinter, let alone actual Olympians.

Messi's talent and ability is at odds with his admitted and consistent HGH use. Without the drugs, he likely isn't the athlete he is today. Another L for soccer. :mjpls:

Well I mean the dude was born with genetic growth hormone deficiency :manny:

...and he doesn't even really use strength to his advantage. Messi's skill is in his control and agility. Ronaldo is a much "stronger" forward...same with Bale, Suarez and Benzema. Speed isn't really as important as agility and control in Soccer. Ronaldo is still ungodly fast for his size same with Bale (scary when he's at 100%) BUT Bale doesn't have the ball control that neither Messi or Ronaldo have.

I personally think on of the most exciting guys to watch right now is Alexis Sanchez. He's electrifying on the ball (even if he loses possession a bit much), he tracks back to defend and he'd dangerous at any point around the box.

But Basketball and Soccer are the only true "World Sports".

:russ: Poverty ball, ya having a canadian gym teacher throw a leather ball into a peach basket doesn't sound like poverty at all.. :laff:

Soccer wasn't made by poor folks, and neither was basketball actually. I know its not everyone's cup of tea, but shyt I like all sports and the hate for soccer on her makes me think you all drive F-150s, chew snuff and fukk your cousins...your lack of perspective...

you fukkers can't even understand offsides :heh:

I'm a soccer fan and all but I think this thread is changing my mind a bit

People coming up with real rational, intelligent arguments while all the pro-soccer posters do is post youtube links of all-time great and memorable goals, like the other 99.9999% of the sport doesn't exist

It is quite clearly been stated multiple times in this thread why football is a global game. Not only football but basketball which is a much more popular game outside the US than any other of your sports.

If you want to realise why American football is so useless outside of the US, consider cricket, which is most times longer than baseball (one game can last 5 days) and requires more equipment than American football (ball, bat, guards, wickets and a considerable amount of space and of course you need to keep retrieving the ball.) But again, it is more popular than all US sports.

I don't know why there is so much debate about stuff that people do not understand. Travel, know what different cultures are and just realise that living in the fishbowl that is the US shouldn't blinker your knowledge of how the world works

I dont think its culture. Looks like cricket was developed in england and then brought over.
"the game developed from its origins in England into a game which is now played professionally in most of the Commonwealth of Nations"

they should play what their ancestors played or come up with their own sport
