This may be the most incorrect statement I've seen all day.

Not only is an SSL good practice for data encryption but it also helps with SEO and overall ranking on SERPs.

You will also get a warning from popular browsers when you don't have an SSL. Makes your site look less authentic and untrustworthy.

NOPE. IT GENERALLY ISN'T WORTH IT FOR MOST FORUMS. IT IS MERELY A TIE BREAKER. THERE ARE MORE COST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO GET BETTER RESULTS IN THAT AREA. ANY SITE BIG ENOUGH TO FRONT THE COST HAS PROBABLY DONE THESE THINGS ALREADY AND IT IS JUST A PERK.

THERE IS REALLY NOTHING TO PROTECT ON A FORUM. IT JUST ISN'T COST EFFECTIVE FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZE SITES.

WHEN WE SWITCHED OVER AT AT MY OLD JOB THERE WAS ROUGHLY A $2000 INCREASE IN COST PER YEAR. IT WON'T BE THAT HIGH FOR THIS SITE BUT THERE WILL BE A COST.

FOR THE RECORD, I'M NOT A PRO WITH THIS. I JUST REMEMBER SOME OF THE THINGS WE WENT THROUGH WHILE SWITCHING.

Let's Encrypt is completely free and the SSL I would actually recommend for this forum.

If this site is running on an Apache server then it's even easier (not sure about NGINX or IIS since I've never set up Let's Encrypt on those platforms).

I do, I'm a web developer. But fair point, I have no idea if the Coli has a developer or if they solely require help from a third party.

Because that's the only part of the site that needs it.
Its not particularly crucial for a forum to be encrypted, but its also not difficult at all to do it so might as well...



You can usually buy certs from whoever your host is.
Or if you have your own webserver, you can generate your own certs.
Either way we're talking 30 mins of work at best
