Why isn't Wale bigger/more popular than he is?

Honestly, it's for superficial reasons, he's short, ugly and swagless. J Cole & Wale are basically the same artist, Cole is bigger simply because he's tall & not annoyingly corny, plus backed by Jay z. Just goes to show how superficial the industry & fans are.

yeah this. Granted he's still pretty popular but his persona comes off as kinda bland.

I dont know why these suspect nikkas on here are talking bout his looks as if kanye and kendrick aren't short and dark.
Nothing to do with being sus just an understanding of how his target audience thinks. Is J Cole not one of the most bland rappers to ever hit platinum?

Nobody is mentioning fukking Wale as being Top 5-8 :heh:

Drake,Nicki,Wiz,Future,Kendrick,Big Sean,J Cole,Meek, ASAP are all bigger than Wale.

Wale straight up went from literally saying " I just want these bytches to understand that nikkas really be rapping"..... to making damn R&B songs for black women attending college.

ASAP rocky is not bigger than wale as for future and meek mills this there first albums that put up numbers none of th went gold wale did

Basically he didn't get fukked by the white man and when I say 'fukked' I don't mean gay shyt I mean he didn't change his persona. He stuck with a sound that gave him a specific audience and kept it that way instead of switching up. No illuminati conspiracy, no booty giving smh believe it or not, the industry is still conniving nothing has changed.

I agree somewhat.
He's pretty unique in that he appears to have a solid fanbase and he brings in good money
doing what he does so the label kind of just lets him do his own thing.

I think if he were a financial liability they'd be trying to change his style to make him more appealing but as it stands now he's selling records, touring etc. and doing what is expected of him.

From a tangible standpoint, I actually agree with Napoleon :ohhh: he's a bit too wordy and that's not gonna crossover today. Also, personally, I like wordy rappers but he doesn't have the diction/annunciation to do so. His songs that really stick, like Lotus Flower Bomb or The Matrimony, you can catch what he's saying. He also needs R&B singers for his hooks (notice the trend of his biggest singles) and in this era it's critical for a rapper to be proficient at hooks by himself.

Intangibles, he's very outspoken and passionate emotional, and because of the tangible stuff up top, it comes off as his talk being bigger than his walk, or his product not matching his attitude. And someone correctly compared his cosign to the others in this era...Ross as a cosigner is not gonna give Wale that Drake/Cole/Kendrick platform.

And for the record his appearance ain't part of it. He takes pride in his fashion sense and I don't hear too many girls calling him ugly. So :comeon: Coli militants

He's missing that 1 hit where he can stand on his own two. That was Big Sean's issue (not that he didn't have hits, but IDFWU was a song where you KNOW it's a Big Sean song and it's helped him out big time). On top of that, Sean's been featured on big songs. Wale really hasn't outside of No Hands. If Wale isn't doing an album cycle or mixtape, he's M.I.A. J. Cole is almost an exception to the rule except he's had big hits on his own. He makes very good, sometimes thought provoking music and he puts stuff out that not others in his position would (and still does generally well), but perception would change if he was doing more shyt in terms of features. J. Cole you could argue NEEDED songs like Work Out and Power Trip to get to where he is now. Wale needs that kind of smash
I'd say Lotus Flower Bomb is Wale's signature song. It's just not a song you can jam to its a mellow song but that song was big for Wale

I'm not saying Wale doesn't have hits. Big Sean had hits off his first album, but you can say they were aided by who was on the record with him. I think Wale has tried to do that on his own terms with songs like LoveHate Thing and The White Shoes, but those songs unfortunately haven't become hits

For someone like Cole, his singles have leaned on features too except Work Out and this third album cycle. I don't disagree with you on the point of Wale not having "his own" song though
