Good defensive teams stop both. Rex's defenses kept him in games he could never get a decent qb or the offense going to take advantage of it.

The jaguars had one of the worst run defenses in the league last year but were number 1 against the pass and the number one 2 Defense.
The chargers were DEAD last in opposing yards per carry but were a top 3 scoring D.
