U just answered your own question
Better teams means more money

Becoming better sometimes means getting worse first. A lot of the big market franchises who have struggled(Knicks and Jets for instance) dont want to swallow the rebuild pill. They prefer kicking the can down the road.

local tv deals are separate from the league deals with ESPN, TNT and the like right?

More people in the arena means more ways for the owner to wring money out of the space...

Yes, better teams in the best markets (LA, New York, Dallas, Houston, etc) means more money for owners.

Better teams in bad markets like (Oklahoma, St Louis, Carolina) means less money for owners.

I think the more interesting question is why socialist ideas like revenue sharing and luxury taxes are so beloved in our sporting environments and so despised in our social and economic policy.

:sas2:
People have been conditioned to hate socialism and communism without knowing why they hate it

Market doesnt matter. Teams make more money when they win. Like look at the Cleveland cavaliers. Some of the money is shared, but not all of it

Don't think it works the way u think it does
They don't all split revenue equally among teams, some revenue is split while the rest the team keeps

Revenue sharing isn't robust enough to insulate a completely collapsed basketball market. NBA basketball remains in its relative infancy in Oklahoma City, which makes it especially vulnerable to a complete collapse if the team is governed like say the Sacramento Kings. TV contracts are so large that it gets outsiders ready to buy in, but year to year they still need gate, merch, and local deals to pay the bills

gotcha

there is no way that having a losing team is just as good as fielding a winning squad
