So after breaking up on bad terms will have her doing a check-up to compare her life to the guy's life. She'll strive to do better if he's doing better than her. If it's on 'friendly' terms, she will still try to do better.

Because the chick wants him back and doing better by any means necessary, whether it's makin him jealous or just achieving her goals for a better life, ultimately is to show him she's his best choice. Though most often that's not the case since the guy is just a fukkin' idiot.
