If you are serious about music, video, or graphic design I would recommend a Mac. The entry cost is serious but I can tell you that my 2009 27" imac still runs as good as the day I bought it and has great software. Windows machines are great as well, but when it comes to music I prefer Apple as do most studios.

If you aren't doing graphics I would skip the retina display and save about $500. The baseline displays are no joke.

You don't HAVE to get a brand new one...you can grab a good deal on craigslist. Especially in a place like New York.

Hell I just got one of those unibody white macbooks in excellent condition for $208 and will be flipping it for $400

I don't know I like 13 inch screens and if I'm correct unless you have a loyalty to mac products you can find good computers starting from 350'and up depending on your uses.
