America's Darkside--210

Cliffs: Music funding being cut in schools overtime and less time in church have caused singers to not get “practice reps” for singing that previous era singers used to.

Now what’s not mentioned in this video though is the pure lack of artist development. Labels sign people, don’t put anything behind them, watch them die on stage, then wonder why they’re dying on stage.

Another thing, there are legit singers around today, but the spotlight isn’t on them, meaning you have to search for them instead of them being right in your face.

Not to be a hater but he does talk about artist development in the video. I watched this video before. I do think the YouTube/American Idol age has something to do with the decline as well. I'm sure the pool of great singers is smaller but the public and labels aren't fishing for them either. Just looking for cheap acts to quickly turnover and push streams.

crazy! I catch myself sounding like my pops all the time now, and I finally get it…

Back then, pops would complain that our music (hip hop and R&B) was a ripoff of the music he grew up with (I’m 38 btw)…I was always like damn pops, nikkas is innovating sounds and paying homage by sampling…he always said it ruined and cheapened the sound since there were REAL musicians in his day…

Now I say some of the same things he said lol…I say, “they not even trying to hide/remix the sample” and he used to say the same things about us…

We missing that “love/romance” in our music. Nobody wants “love” anymore. Now it’s “Eff Love” and “I Hate You” nobody singing with that passion. Like a lot of y’all said the prioritization of looks and using digital vocals aids really cheapened the music…there’s good artists out there, but now you can’t just throw a rock and hit one you really have to search…I grew up with Whitney, Mary, Mariah, JHud, Fantasia really going at it…who sound remotely close to those ladies nowadays? And male RnB acts? Groups? LMBO

I like this song a lot, but I thought about this thread when I heard it last night. A lot of these people now be rap singing or sing rapping, whatever you want to call it. I mean that works sometimes… sometimes it doesn’t work. I guess it makes a song easier to sing along to so people do it.

Culture vultures like Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Adele, Halsey, Charlie Puth, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and many more other charlatans have led to the drop in quality.

They hit some struggle falsettos and people suddenly they are Marvin Gaye or Whitney...

Music education in the school or Church has been decimated and that is what many of the greats were born and raised into. Image was built after the talent was apparent.

Now, not so much, image is 90% and 10% talent can be augmented by tech...

Also, many producers of today are trash and can't read or understand music concepts, hence why they have to chop up 90s/00s samples in full since they can't create a simple bassline...

if we being real, this is about a 20-30 yr old issue, in the mid 90's/early 00's people preferred to sign and promote eye candy over talent, you can def have both, but a lot of marginal singers started getting on.

This 100%.

In the old days, you could be average looking but if you had a great voice....they'll put some nice clothes and makeup on the woman and let her sing like she's in church.

Nowadays, they take the most attractive women they can find with any kind of singing talent and then try to manufacture the best singing they can. The idea is they'd rather have eye candy with controllable sound over average broad with elite pipes.

Adele is a modern example of the old school approach. She's not Whitney, Gladys, Aretha etc...not even close but the idea is the same. She's better than most current famous singers with an average look but her voice stands out in this era...so they let it ride.

Like others have said, its all about looks. If the girl looks good then they will put her on a track to put out some whisper, ghost wails and call it a day.

Another thing is, there isnt any music behind the vocalists. They playing simple chords and rap beats and expect the vocals to carry the entire song, but when the vocals are trash too, it gets masked by calling it vibe music. If there were actual bands putting music behind folks it wouldnt be as bad. Take the vocals off some of these current tracks and you have nothing. Take the vocals off some tracks from the 60s-80s and you still have a huge hit.

I parlay your answer with this, cars are environmentally destructive, dangerous as ever loving shyt, and have killed more humans than maybe every species of horse combined that has likely ever lived with interactions with people. So to be quite frank, a horse is actually much safer than a car (getting everywhere by train and trolley still the goat option though)
safety won't matter to you when you are trying to get cross.country & your trusty steed has to keep stopping to eat drink shyt piss

go back if you want

Sade songs actually have meaning and there is good music behind it. You dont know what the hell you talking about.
Cabaret singer. Held up by her band.

Her new music has zero impact and is largely forgettable because Sweetback band made her shine.

I think it's you who doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

Just because your parents blasted Sade doesn't mean you know shyt about singing.

You about as emotional as Sade.

She opened the gates for low tier vocalists to get in the game.

Kehlanis the worst offender of the Jhene Aiko wannabes

Kelhani sounds nothing like Jhene. Her voice has more punch.

Have heard their music?
