Why the obsession over lighter skin?

As someone who isn't black, and not American either, I've always been curious as to why some African Americans desire lighter skin? I've seen comments regarding better hair, eyes, etc. I can sorta see why some wouldn't like extremes on both ends, but I'd like to hear some reasons/explanations from the black folk here.

You have to understand that the reason black women are at the bottom of the beauty totem pole in western society and globally is because of the lack of power black men possess presently. (Due to the fact that societies are still run by men)

The fact that white women have been made into the standard of beauty is because of the global power and influence white men possess which in turn shines positively on their women. You as a black man should not take pride in saying that white women are the beauty standard.

This current situation is a mark of failure on all black men.

It isn't "African Americans" who desire lighter skin...let's keep it 110% with the specifics...it's darker black women who wish they were lighter. I don't care how many Lupita Nyongo's we put on a cover of a magazine...black women will always have an appetite for lighter skin and hair hats.

I've asked black people in real life. I actually lived with two black guys in university, and have asked that question multiple times. I just wanted the perspective of Americans.

You say to him and inform him he better lose all those earth ways and start cutting up his face if he wants to truely be beautiful. He looks at you like you're crazy and runs from you.

A month later you're bartending an alien party and you see your old high school friend, at the party, mingling, in high class alien attire. He walks over to you and you notice he has mastered the alien language and has a big ass dent in his forehead along with a keloid scar going from the top of his forehead to his chin. He orders a drink from you and gives you that look.

Then the aliens tell him to bring his human ass to a circle of aliens and you watch your friend juggle rocks and all the aliens are enjoying themselves. You're jealous and decide when you go home your going to beat your face into a wall to get to his level.

true, but it's important to single out black women in particular with this issue...because it's primarily an issue that they themselves struggle with.

Also, hair hats aren't exclusive to any one race...true, but I haven't seen any white women, Asian, and Indian women strolling around with Afro wigs lately, have you?
