Why was MF Doom never relevant to the masses?

He's one of the few artists in hip-hop who knows how to cultivate his mystique, even in an age where everything is on the internet.

On the low he's collaborated with Nike, Adidas, Clarks, New Era, Adult Swim and The Hundreds over the years. I think he's where he wants to be.

Ha. I mean with a modified image and flow but similar lyrics and content he could have been in a lane that touched the mainstream. I mean if somebody like Canibus could have a level of mainstream popularity, then a slightly modified DOOM could have as well (not comparing Canibus to him, but providing an example of a super lyrical obscure reference type rapper).

Nah I hear you... thing is though Canibus was lucky enough to have Wyclef in his corner for his run – and decided to diss a legendary rapper while he had the spotlight. Just two different things.

Ok so let me get this straight...you're questioning why a guy that wore a metal face mask didnt blow up in the era where big budget videos were a thing and the most popular rappers were all over TV? Doom's style didnt have a mainstream appeal to it and still doesn't. He's almost unmarketable. When you sit down and listen to his lyrics his shyt is undeniable.

He literally wanted to be like Dr. Doom....using Doombots at shows, and blowing up in the background, everyone in the game knows he's a threat and that his use of the english language is top tier....

i dont really think he wanted to be. i was aware of him before but really got into him through the danger mouse/ adult swim project. he had buzz online at the time that was way bigger than underground. i hav no doubt he couldve springboarded to a bigger label and did things on a grander level. then theres his reclusiveness. the charm of that will only take u so far. but i do think its genuine.
