Watching some old videos of him and I really can't figure out why. The NBA is supposedly much more advanced today with advanced training drills and MJ is still considered the best with nobody coming close.

What made him become so good? It couldn't be genetics because he was skinny his early years and his height is a standard 6'6.

Was his work ethic just that good where he became the best and today's players are just lazy?

No doubt that you have to sacrifice anytime you play with a top 50 player. However I can name alog of players from all positions better than pippen in that era of Jordans prime. Barkley, Hakeem, Dominique Wilkins, Robinson, Isiah Thomas, Karl Malone, Magic. Anyone else is debatable.

This. Were there players faster than Jordan, yes. Stronger than Jordan, yes. Better Ball handlers than Jordan, yes. Better Shooters, yes. Better overall athletes, yes. BUT Jordan has insane work ethic, like he had a freakish love for the game he obsessed over it and did the work in the dark to become better. He even adapted his game as the league changed. Same with other greats like Hakeem, Kareem, Kobe, Stockton, Kidd, Payton etc.
