So Japan wasn't colonized because of:
- distance
- they did everything African nations should have done but didn't.
- resources weren't worth it
They saw what happened when the Europeans wanted access to Chinese markets during the Opium War and made the call to open theirs willingly. Didn't want ports destroyed and leaders going missing.
When they tightened up again and after an American attack, the bombs opened up their markets to international eyes.

Yeah even the Mongols failed because of the favorable winds and sea for the Japanese. They couldn't make a proper trek to dispatch men and take over.

The Europeans sailed their navies into China & started bombing the cities with canons & started wars against the Chinese using superior firepower.
The Japanese learnt from this & instead welcomed the Europeans & started trading with them.
They then learnt their technology, studied it & then started producing their own versions, making sure the Europeans lost their advantage.
