Why would a record label buy it's own albums?

Someone selling a lot of albums in one week isn't going to intrigue 75K to buy an album they can download for free. Their purchase is still dependent on them:

1) being intrigued enough to even check that artist's music

2) them liking what they heard enough to purchase

Even if 75K was intrigued enough, that's not nearly enough to make up for the amount of copies that the label supposedly purchased.

As far as huge artists flopping, look at 50 Cent and Nelly. 50 was a big name (though declining) and couldn't even reach Gold with a semi-successful single in "Baby By Me". Nelly was a consistent seller up until '08 and barely went gold with a single featuring Fergie.

They're not stupid. If an artist is finished as a major player why waste the time/expense when they'll flop the next week/album. Buy an extra 100k of Kendrick Lamar's album and he now looks like the next big thing commercially for hip-hop.

it can be viewed as a marketing expense...people pay attention to what they think is popular...if there is hype for something it gets good reviews and it is perceived to sell well then it creates a buzz and people are intrigued and go buy it...how does this not make sense?

they make their money on touring and concerts and appearances and i doubt the record company will buy all the albums...just enough to get them to that milestone...say they need 200,000 to get platinum...they will spend the extra holy crap thats like 2.5 million in marketing thats superbowl ad money lol

the other issue is logistics it would be easy to track one giant purchase from one source so it would be easy to find for investigators

i'm actually unsure if this is feasible or not depending on what the typical marketing budget is and the logistics of buying 200,000 albums and being able to hide such a large purchase

Def jam was being investigated for cheating sound scan. They had some gimmick going on and that's why all the bosses left def jam.

:what: how is that even possible?

that would be like me buying copies of my own cd's. the inflated numbers make my cd seem more popular, in turn raising demand. then i pull out the cd's i "bought" and sell them again.

economically that doesnt even make sense :heh:

To start the snowball effect. These labes don't want slow heaters anymore. First week/first month sales are all they care about. You hear an album sold over 500 000 the first week makes ur eyebrows raise and peeks ur curiosity. It's called marketing. Why do dope boys give out testers? To get that word spreading. And I'm sure it's not only contained to hip hop. You know Taylor Swift's label was buying up some albums to push her to no.1

I mean its a little suspicious when you see these huge drop offs from 1st week to 2nd week in sales. Someone like Adele selling consistently week to week but in Hip Hop theres like a 75 percent drop off?

Adele is an anomaly. I think the fact that her album was accepted so well is probably why it is going to continue to sell

$5 is still more expensive than free. most new releases was no more than $10 at places like target and best buy back then anyway.
