LG delivers 'Real 8K' in 2020 with eight new OLED and LCD TVs

These sets can manage 8K at 60FPS, if you can find a source for content

With CES about to start, LG has unveiled some hints about its new top of the line TVs for 2020 without mentioning prices or release dates. In this era that means jumping from 4K to 8K, and the company will have eight new models that it says promise "Real 8K" performance that "exceeds" the CTA's spec for 8K. The way LG sees things, even though Samsung's QLED tech may be certified as 8K, that doesn't make it "real" without surpassing a minimum test for contrast modulation (CM) threshold requirements.

Those eight 8K models include two LG Signature OLED sets in 88- and 77-inch sizes (88/77 OLED ZX) as well as six of its NanoCell-branded LCD televisions (75/65 Nano99, 75/65 Nano97, 75/65 Nano95) in 75- and 65-inch sizes. In terms of getting 8K content (whenever and wherever that's available), they can handle YouTube's preferred AV1 codec as well as HEVC and VP9, 8K inputs from USB or HDMI, and finally, 8K 60FPS via streaming as well as 8K 60P via HDMI.

For a new year, LG is bringing a new third-gen version of its Alpha9 AI processor, which of course is ready to do all the upscaling and sharpening necessary for its 8K TVs, as well as AI Sound Pro processing. That's supposed to identify between five different types of content and adjust accordingly so words are clearer and scenes are upmixed to 5.1.

While we'll have to wait and see how many of these features trickle down to cheaper televisions, the 8K line will also feature LG's ThinQ AI tech, with a webOS software package that can handle voice control, plus Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. That all sounds similar to last year's TVs, but now LG is also promising that in the future it will have "premium far-field voice compatibility." That way, you can just talk to the TV like an Echo device, instead of using push-to-talk with the remote.

Samsung's zero-bezel 8K TV is real
The AI 'quantum processor' inside can multitask apps and upscale streaming video to 8K.

Samsung Korea has announced a premium 8K TV it's bringing to CES 2020, confirming the image that leaked a few days ago is real. The Q950TS is not only a super-high resolution TV, it also "sets a new standard" for TV screens with its Infinity Design. Other than a small edge along the bottom, there's really no frame to speak of, and Samsung says it measures only 15mm thick.

Inside, its AI "quantum processor" powers a revamped UI that's good for upscaling any source to 8K as well as accessing TV over antenna, or streaming services, with a universal guide that can combine recommendations from several apps at once.

It even has a "digital butler" that Samsung says will allow it to control other hardware via Bluetooth, WiFi, and even older non-internet connected devices. It can mirror content from a mobile devices with just a touch using "Tap View," while picture-in-picture is back, with the ability to multitask on one screen. Naturally there's also support for digital assistants, with Bixby, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa onboard.

It also has Samsung's AI ScaleNet technology built-in, that the company has claimed will allow 8K streaming on networks that only have enough bandwidth for 4K. It compresses an 8K source to 4K resolution, then streams over the internet, where the AI processor upscales it back to 4K, which its developers claim will provide a higher quality picture. Amazon Prime is named as using the technology, although we'll have to see if it's used to stream 8K-quality video right away. Separately, the TV supports AV1 for 8K YouTube videos.

The AI processor is also behind its audio capabilities, with Object Tracking Sound Plus tech that moves audio around based on what's happening on-screen, providing a 5.1 surround effect with just the TV's speakers. Meanwhile, a new Q-Symphony feature combines the TV's speakers with compatible soundbars, which adds up to a potentially 9.1.4 speaker setup if you're properly equipped.

We should find out more about this display and everything Samsung is bringing to CES over the next few days, including how well some of these features, like Tap View and ScaleNet streaming, work in practice.

Quibi: a mobile-centric, short-form streaming video platform

trill-league-1620x800-1.png

Hollywood latest obsession is Quibi, a mobile-centric, short-form streaming video platform set to launch next spring. But what is Quibi

What is Quibi?
It’s a subscription-based streaming platform designed to deliver short-form scripted and unscripted content to your cell phone. The name is a mash-up of the words “quick” and “bites,” a nod to the fact that episodes of Quibi shows will run roughly seven to ten minutes in length.

How much will it cost?
Right now, the plan is to offer two tiers of service, similar to how Hulu operates. Pay $5 per month and you’ll see some advertising (likely one or two spots per episode, with some ads as brief as six seconds). Don’t want any ads at all? It’ll cost you $8 per month.

Who’s behind it?
Katzenberg is the project’s founder, while former eBay and Hewlett-Packard boss Meg Whitman serves as Quibi’s chief executive officer. The content team includes ex–DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson, former CAA exec Jim Toth, former THR co-president Janice Min (who’s focusing on news and information programs), and former Viacom/MTV exec Doug Herzog. A slew of big-media conglomerates are also putting their financial heft behind Quibi: Investors include Warner Bros., NBCUniversal, Disney, BBC Studios, Lionsgate, and MGM, according to media reports

Everything We Know About Quibi | The New Mobile Streaming Service

Published on Jan 8, 2020
You can't stream Quibi on your TV. And that's a good thing. Quibi announces its revolutionary new streaming service, which brings streaming content exclusively to your phone in bite-size chunks (6-10 minutes long) called 'Quibis.' And this isn't a new YouTube, either. Quibi is snagging mega-talent like Steven Spielberg, Anton Fuqua, Reese Witherspoon, to make mini movies, shows, and daily content. Quibi's biggest "gasp from the audience" moment was the announcement of Turnstile, which allow you to "choose your own adventure" with how you interact and view content. Flip your phone to portrait mode and see one camera view. Swap it to landscape and experience the show in a whole new way. It opens up new realms of what content creators will be able to do with the format of their content.
