This is the post I made in that "House Party" remake thread

I have completely accepted that for the most part we are living in the DARK AGES when it comes to black creativity in entertainment(including music)

The creativity of the 80s,90s, and hell the early 2000s is LONG GONE

And I honestly believe that. And please don't come in here and post about 2 or 3 shows. OF course there are exceptions like "Atlanta" and things like that but they are exceptions. It's a damn shame that the creativity in black entertainment is so horrible right now smh.

Back in the day:mjcry:

So do you guys honestly think we'll have another Golden Age in Black Entertainment?

Depends on who gets control in Black media. There’s plenty of talent and opportunity, but we’re in a rut right now.
There's a reason people get pissed with Tyler Perry. I mean I always say that I respect his hustle and how he's built an empire but his content is horrendous. He honestly could help usher in a new Golden Age of Black Entertainment if he had any artistic talent and creativity. But sadly he has NONE smh

To be fair, no one is making small niche films anymore. The industry is dominated by comic book shyt, “man with a gun” action films, Disney shyt, and other franchises. This isn’t black specific.

The problem for black film/tv is the inability to pitch anything that doesn’t revolve around black trauma porn. We’re seeing a marriage between the beautiful framing/cinematography of black characters from Moonlight, with a trivial hot take on Get Out that says “what if the black experience was a horror theme.” So you get these artistic images of death, pain, and torture. It’s pathetic.

I agree with you entirely. With the market control he, Lee Daniels, and Oprah have - they could bring in the brightest and most talented young Black artists to produce some brilliant works - rather than this in-house mediocrity and lazy rehashing.

Dark=negative?

Black art is flourishing. There are more outlets than ever before. The problem is that in terms of some of the art forms, the geniuses of past eras have set marks that are impossible to ever top.
Some of the Verzuz shows are hammering that point home.
In some ways it is, in some ways it is not.

There's a much wider array of Black shows and movies, but there's also a glut of mediocre or even bad content.
Atlanta, Insecure, The Chi, Key & Peele, Pose, Chewing Gum, I May Destroy You, P-Valley, and Snowfall are all pretty good-to-fantastic projects.

And there are unbelievably good Black movies coming out every year - but there's so much garbage - Tyler Perry has 6-7 bad shows on right now, the reality tv shows with black casts are really running things media-wise, etc.
