there is a difference between not having realistic chances to win the title and being 3-1 in the conference finals against a 73 win team
celtics and miami big three was done because their players had a supporting cast which only hakeem olajuwon could have takent to the title in the history of nba, something needed to be done.

Rings in football is way worse. At least NBA players play both ways and are not completely dependent on others for everything they do. This argument will never die though, it will only take another form (see: getting to the Finals and losing < losing before getting there)

KD getting a title gets the "never won a title" off his back but I don't think it helps his overall legacy because of how he did it, fair or unfair that's how he will be judged. Him leaving a team that was up 3-1 in the WCF to join the 73 win team that beat him will always have an asterisk

KD getting a title gets the "never won a title" off his back but I don't think it helps his overall legacy because of how he did it, fair or unfair that's how he will be judged. Him leaving a team that was up 3-1 in the WCF to join the 73 win team that beat him will always have an asterisk

Wilt scored 100 in a game but we don't consider him the GOAT because of circumstances. Bill Russell won 11 rings but we don't consider him the GOAT because of circumstances. Everyone will remember how Durant got his ring(s), and yes I assume he'll win one this year or next. But history is not without context.
