well the window for movies to come out on dvd/bluray has shrunk tremendously the past year. it used to take 8-12 months 10 years ago.. now its exactly 2 months after release they are out to buy.

movies are only in theatres for 3 weeks. I think purchasing the movie on demand same day as theatres will be the standard.

I think I may have already posted in this thread but Movie theaters arent going ANYWHERE. It's just an experience you cant replicate no matter how big ppls tv's become and how crazy their in home entertainment setup is.

Sitting in a theater with a bunch of other ppl watching the movie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> being at home watching it.

Yes other streams of revenue for studios will open up such as ordering the movie when it releases through your cable company but will that be enough to make movie theaters obsolete no.

It certain movies (Dark Knight for example) that Ive missed out and dont even care to even watch it since I didnt see it in theaters.

I hope not.

the world is starting to suck

technology is a gift and a curse

I've said it before, I'll say it again - in 20 years, the only stores that will exist will be supermarkets and restaurants. Soon enough someone is going to invent a clothing website that shows you on the screen wearing the clothes, and matches your measurements perfectly. that will be a huge breakthrough and people will never go to the store to buy clothes again. Barnes and Noble and Best Buy type places will be dead in 5 years, and that will lead to malls going under. People will have TVs the size of walls and will be able to purchase recently released movies at home.

I don't even know what will happen with all the open land, probably more housing for the overpopulation.

... or, I'm totally wrong

this is a horrible thread

first of all Where do you see Red Boxes and Netflix closings:mjpls:...red box have more kiosks all over ,and netflix is STREAMING, and they cut new deals with studios for more contents

People staying away from theaters, to avoid rising costs?

How many movies have grossed over 400 Mil the past 5 years?

Recent Theater shootings? There only 1 Major shooting, and people still went to see Dark Knight Rises:smugbiden:

Soon You Will get to see New Movies for a price? :comeon: Where the fukk you been the past 2 years..its already occurring:heh:

:what::comeon:

This is a horrible response. No clue how you got 8 people to agree with you. But the The Rec Room has been suspect since the mass migration and escape from the :hamster:

I'll just shut down your first 2 counter arguments

1. This is not really related to OPS point but Hollywood's putting Redbox in a choke hold, Netflix also. They see the mass migration away from classic movie distribution (theaters first) happening and they want to take control of it. They saw what happened with music.

Warner Brothers, Universal and MGM just pulled over 2,000 movies from Netflix. They are starting their own distribution platforms. Redbox has had an embargo imposed on them by all of the major Hollywood studies on new DVD's. More and more studios want to handle their own distribution rental or otherwise. They see what's coming and it's not good.

Why do you think Netflix is rushing to start developing it's own content? They don't want to rely on Hollywood for content because they see the writing on the wall.

2. Movies have grossed over 400 mil because ticket prices are SKY HIGH and because of 3D and IMAX. If you look at actual tickets sold you'll see that the Box Office IS under-performing. In the top 25 tickets sold of all time there's only one movie from the past decade in that list. Avatar at number 14. Does that really support your argument? Of course not.

Less and less people are going to the movie theaters. Less and less people are buying tickets. That's why pretty much every Blockbuster is seeing 3D post conversion (cheaper than shooting in 3D). And every old blockbuster is being rereleased with 3D post conversion. ITS A CASH GRAB. You have movies playing in IMAX that weren't even shot in 1.43:1. Cash grab!

I don't feel like going in on the last 2 points. But to agree with OP home theaters are going to be standard in new houses built. Especially with the prices of projectors coming down.

Why do you think that Hollywood (not talking about IFC) is already making plans to release movies to your home same day as movie theater release? 10 years from now I'll be able to get Ironman 7 for $50 delivered to my home theater.

Have a seat. Enjoy some popcorn nikka.

I see where you getting at but all that aint happening in the next 20 years.

You can get a 1080p projector for $600. All you would need is a light controlled room (a basement) and a projector.

There's a reason that Best Buy puts the projectors on the back shelf in the corner of the store.....the margins aren't healthy on them. If people knew they could get the movie theater experience for 1/2 of the cost of a 52" TV there would be a mass movement to projectors.

Add in a surround sound system and you're looking at a home theater for under $2k

You can't compare cameras, CDs, to movies.

It's like saying bars will be obsolete in the near future. You can buy a bottle of whatever for the price you pay at a bar or club. You can play your music, wear whatever you want in the confines of your own home, and don't have to worry about long lines, admission prices. etc. So why do people still go to bars/clubs?Restaurants, you can cook that ish at home, so why go out? To get out the house, the social atmosphere...even people watch.

I believe that most people don't want to sit in the house for everything. Some people like to go out and enjoy being around people. Some things can't be simulated, no matter how much you want them to be, and people are unpredictable. But on the flip side, I'm sure there are some people out there that can't wait to have surrogate representations out themselves out in the real world.

All true.

Good points on both sides, from my point of view it’ won’t become obsolete anytime soon because a lot of people go to the movies as a social activity (going out on a date, with friends) just as much as to watch the movie itself. I don’t how it is in the US, but in Europe (France-Belgium) we often go eat first, then a movie, then drinks, so in that aspect it won’t really change. And technology is indeed getting better, but all that technology still doesn’t beat going out (for those who care).

Some movies are also just made for the big screen and worth experiencing in public (for example I remember seeing The Matrix went it came out, you could feel people were stunned by the movie).

The price is indeed an issue, but for example here you have cards where you pay 20 euros per month and you go to the movies…as much as you want to. I go AT LEAST 4-5 times a month, and whenever I go there’s a good attendance.

It may also just be cultural, I know that a lot of Europeans just like going out, and will pay the extra buck to get out of their house. I personnaly haven't even seen a movie at home in maybe two years. And I don't know, when at home I just don't get "in" the movie as much, I'll do more breaks, check internet, answer the phone...etc. In the movie theater I feel I "experience" the movie much more. Last time was with "Only God Forgives", the movie had me damn near hypnotised.

Grocery stores are barely making money, now that everyone is selling groceries. Its just a matter of time till buying groceries is online easily and delivered to you within the hour like pizza.

I haven't been to a movie theater in ages, prices are outrageous, if you don't get their early enough your straining your neck.

I dont think movie theaters are going away, i just think as we move forward people will become more selective in what they are willing to spend money on. I mean real talk if it wasnt for my girl, I would go to the movie theaters about 4 times a year, but my girl loves going to the theater so we go anywhere from 12-15 times a year.

funny you mention this. a lot of theaters in other countries don't put seats that close to the screen so theres no neck straining..that whole area near the screen is empty. I saw gatsby recently and had to sit in the 2nd row. :bryan:

 America
A lot of theaters are trying to do "reserved seating" but those teenagers with their first job dont enforce it at all and people still sit wherever. only the really fancy expensive ones that serve food enforce it.

The first movie theater opened in 1905. Here we are 107 years later and I think things are changing. This is something I never thought I would say. Being a long time movie fan there's nothing like watching movies on the Big Screen. Theater packed and the crowd really into it. It's a great feeling. But something happen since I was born in the 1980's. Technology is changing rapidly. People are getting their movies now on their phones and computers. Look at Video Rentals.

Remember going to rent a movie on Friday Night? Now you got Red Box's, Netflix and blockbusters closing down all over the world. Let's not forget downloading is going to be there. So what's my point? I think people are slowly moving away from watching movies on the Big Screen. Hollywood keeps upping those ticket prices to make up the difference but the fact is more and more people are saying home. Add in the even higher cost of concessions, a Family of four could end up spending close to 100 dollars going to the movies. I think we are seeing the downfall of cinema.

Let's also not forget with the recent theater shootings, more people are choosing to say away from crowded theaters. Hollywood is going to have to adapt or they will lose even more money like the music industry. Soon you will get to watch brand new movies in the confort of your home for a price. So even though it's been here for over 100 years? Do you agree that Movie Theaters are falling off? Or will people always want to watch a movie on the Big Screen.
