A black man has Neo would've made the metaphor of blacks being the true israelites resonate more with the audience, all the villains in the movie are white, and Zion is mostly black with a few white allies

in the bible zion is where the israalites go after armageddon

Will Smith is the only black actor they could get away with playing this role and studios would accept, so I can see why they switch up and made Neo white and Morpheus black because Will Smith was obama status at the time and they could get away with it as long as it was him
