"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," said Emmerich, while promoting his latest film, "White House Down." "It would be too much."We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new," the German director added.

Independence Day 1 was his highest grossing film

I would be trying to recoup some of that money from the flop that is After Earth, :damn: but I guess

I wonder how much they were trying to pay him

Yesterday we mentioned that Will Smith would not be part of the INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel, but director Roland Emmerich did say some of the other characters might return. The actors that immediately stood out were Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum. When Movies.com pressed Emmerich on who might return, he revealed that both Pullman and Goldblum we on board. Does that mean that you're on board now? Wait, can we have Brent Spiner too? Dean Devlin who co-wrote the script with Emmerich said he would be down with bringing him back, and out of his apparent coma
