Unless they completely switched up in the new version of Windows, you can extract your product key with an app like Magic Jellybean Keyfinder and then reinstall from a USB drive or DVD.

You just have to take the proper precautions so you're not stuck with a computer that doesn't work.
  • Make sure you download an ISO that has your version of Windows on it.
  • When you reinstall and use the new key you may have to do an activation from the command line. It's not hard but it's an extra step.

I think i found a loophole. I updated the installer and the one i have now lets me skip the serial step. we'll see if it activates. thing is they have your hardware makeup on file and if you switch PCs they can deny you a transfer because the terms of taking the free upgrade tied it to the hardware.

its like when you buy a PC and it comes with Windows on it. That's tied to the hardware and can't be moved.

Yeah the CLI method I mentioned works for that. If you're not switching hardware, it'll be that much easier.

Maybe its this PNY drive. I've tried two of them and I can't even get an install going. It freezes or refuses to boot.

just messed around and lost my whole 4 TB hard drive. I'll have to redownload all my Steam games from scratch and my iPhone / iTunes library is gone. All the music is still on a backup but my metadata, playlist and all that is gone. Hopefully Copytrans can get it off my iPhone and restore it to iTunes. It was fortunate that was just my gaming PC and it just was used to sync my iPhone / iPod Nano and to play Steam games.

Was your OS and data on the same drive or something?
No different drives. The PNY vanished and it got installed to my data drive. I don't know if it's my Mobo or the drive but I can't use PNY drives in my gaming PC. I might pull the Samsung outta my Laptop and see if the PNY can clone it then toss my Samsung in my desktop.

Damn Windows 10 wouldn't activate upon reinstall. I ended up getting on a chat with Microsoft and they gave me a full Windows 10 key. I guess time will tell if the key is movable to a new PC.
