How do you know she was "hanging around"? She might have been coming from/going to work, she might have been coming from/going to see someone in the hospital, etc etc there are plenty of legit reasons to be up and out at 5 in the morning.

There isn't much you can do when someone approaches you close range with a knife. What you can do is try not to put yourself in that position if you know you're unarmed.
