Anyone catch this on NBA TV after the Heat game?

NBA teams are now investing heavy in "analytics." Basically they are paying math nerds to keep track of stats and make inferences from them. Going by what they showed in the presentation it didn't sound like much in terms of earth-shattering news.

Some dude actually did research to find out whether teams that are losing play harder than teams ahead. :what: Dude must have never watched a basketball game in his life. And then he talked about Kobe Bryant takes more shots when his team is behind. :why: All you have to do is watch 10 Lakers games to know this. You don't need to have it plotted out in some 3D graph.

NBA teams stay losing if they're wasting money on this garbage. If you tell your scouts to watch the games like they've always done, it shouldn't be hard to figure this stuff out.

I started to watch it, but that shyt was boring me. I see enough analytics at my job. I dont wanna see that shyt in my leisure time.

You have seen Moneyball, right?

Or understand the premise of smallball and how it transformed baseball into a much deeper game than it was a decade ago?

A similar breakout, or currently understated aspect in the NBA, will come because of using analytics.

:pacspit: this is good for the league.

It has it's place but this shyt doesn't mean anything if the nerds in charge don't win shyt. Which is why I have such disdain for Daryl Morey, Billy Beane, etc.....first round exits and competing for wild cards/7th-8th seeds are what you gonna get with these types. And do I really need analytics to tell me about the "Dwight Effect"??? I'm a Laker fan. I've seen how shytty he's been this year compared to others. Or do we really need to know Lebron's efficiency when guarded by 6'2 guards on the left wing between the 6-8 min mark on a Tuesday compared to other days of the week. Like I said, it has its place but these dudes go overboard with this bullshyt. SVG supposedly shut that shyt down. Wish I could find video on it

:why:why are you mad tho? who gives a fukk?

basically. the amount of money teams spend on this is miniscule compared to an average trash contract of a bum player it has to fulfill.
its chump change.

let them do their thing. basketball isnt the best sport for such an analysis, but it certainly isnt the worst.

even the fact the small-market teams like the a's were able to compete and perform shows that it was a wise investment.

moneyball didnt spontaneously arise. it was the fact that while a team couldnt compete against teams with big wallets, decided to take a different approach

in NBA or NFL, with cap and all, these stats can *potentially* help any or all teams to pinpoint their weaknesses.

no one is saying that it'll help the bucks win a championship or something :heh:

Small market teams have no other option but to play small ball and develop their minor league systems. They can't compete with the Yanks, Phillies and other squads breaking the bank. If it won't help you win a title then what the hell is the point of committing to it? Just to compete and keep the paying public happy with just competing for a playoff spot? Fan bases won't be satisfied with that for long

the marlins 1st wayne spent money:mjpls:

then had a fire sale the next year

moneyball hasnt proved shyt in baseball the one year the marlins won with a marginal payroll were miggy and crew at on another team

To be fair tho, those owners know what theyre doing. Theyre optimizing the money their going to spend. If the team is competitive with low payroll they are able to fill the stadium and sell merchandise while spending less. The Yankees since the dynasty of the 90s has produced 1 title and have spent a ridiculous amount more than low payroll teams like the As, Marlins, D-Backs etc. Im not saying theyre winning titles like that but they know what theyre doing
