 a roster with Bonilla, Floyd, Johnson, Sheffield, Alou, and white is small ball?

03: Cabrera, Rodriguez, Lee, Conine is small ball?

are you trolling or dont realize the players u listed got money after they left? their highest paid player in 97 was Alex Fernandez at 7 mil

and the whole story of the 2003 WS was that the Marlins had a 54 mil payroll compared to the Yankess 164 mil payroll, i dont think u realize what we're talking about in here...

edit: i thought we were talking about payroll?:guccihuh:

You have seen Moneyball, right?

Or understand the premise of smallball and how it transformed baseball into a much deeper game than it was a decade ago?

A similar breakout, or currently understated aspect in the NBA, will come because of using analytics.

:pacspit: this is good for the league.

nope won't happen.....too many factors in basketball to let the moneyball dudes take over.....baseball is easier cause each time a batter comes up its a one off transaction so analytics is actually more relevant

IMO its not as relevant for basketball

Small market teams have no other option but to play small ball and develop their minor league systems. They can't compete with the Yanks, Phillies and other squads breaking the bank. If it won't help you win a title then what the hell is the point of committing to it? Just to compete and keep the paying public happy with just competing for a playoff spot? Fan bases won't be satisfied with that for long
I dont get your point

moneyball is just a way to go about finding best value players for cheap.
which is exactly what small market teams have been doing. it doesnt contradict the development of prospects at all

there is no downside of following a moneyball-style mantra.

and about fanbases, most of fanbases in the NBA that arent dikkriders havent seen their teams win jack shyt. so what ?

moneyball is basically the warriors being able to find talent in d-league, based on some stats and bring them up to be decent players and maybe make the playoffs in the process.

teams with no shot at the title are prime players in moneyball.

It has it's place but this shyt doesn't mean anything if the nerds in charge don't win shyt. Which is why I have such disdain for Daryl Morey, Billy Beane, etc.....first round exits and competing for wild cards/7th-8th seeds are what you gonna get with these types. And do I really need analytics to tell me about the "Dwight Effect"??? I'm a Laker fan. I've seen how shytty he's been this year compared to others. Or do we really need to know Lebron's efficiency when guarded by 6'2 guards on the left wing between the 6-8 min mark on a Tuesday compared to other days of the week. Like I said, it has its place but these dudes go overboard with this bullshyt. SVG supposedly shut that shyt down. Wish I could find video on it

Agreed. If they can tell me something I would've never guessed then its valuable. But if all your doing is letting me know what I already thought, then you are just wasting time and resources.

Do I really need to know that Kobe takes more shots when the Lakers are down? :comeon:

To be fair tho, those owners know what theyre doing. Theyre optimizing the money their going to spend. If the team is competitive with low payroll they are able to fill the stadium and sell merchandise while spending less. The Yankees since the dynasty of the 90s has produced 1 title and have spent a ridiculous amount more than low payroll teams like the As, Marlins, D-Backs etc. Im not saying theyre winning titles like that but they know what theyre doing

the a's are one and done in the playoffs they only got out the 1st round in in 06 against the twins i believe billy beane fool people with that moneyball shyt

also that diamondbacs team that beat the yankees spent money

Well, the Red Sox won 2 titles based on many of the tactics used by Beane and DePodesta. The Mavericks beat the Heat after they crunched the numbers and found the rotation that performed the best against the Heat.

:comeon: Don't know shyt about baseball so I won't comment on it but the Mavericks won cause LeBron choked. No other reason. If LeBron wasn't bytch made they would've swept the Mavs. No stat crunchers could stop 2012 LeBron if he played on the 2011 Heat.

It's already being used in basketball. It's not as prevalent as it is in baseball, but it's being used by teams like the Mavs, Knicks, Heat, and Thunder.

When has a basketball game, let alone an entire series, been decided on 1 factor? Lebron choking might've been the biggest reason, but it wasn't the only reason.

not saying it won't be used just that it won't make a difference

it won't change the game

teams with the best players (as judged using traditional standards) will still win titles

What I'm saying is if all you're trying to do is get the best player you can for the cheap, you're no better than Loria who fire sales all the time. You will never win with this model. They try to say Theo did this somewhat in Boston but that teams payroll averages $130 mil and was constantly in the top 5 of opening day payrolls when he took over. Bad example. And what's the point of playing if the goal is to "maybe" make the playoffs?
