I don't know if Rock was planned to win the title at WM 2000, but it worked out for the best that he didn't in we got an awesome Backlash PPV in return (with Austin) and they were able to get a great PPV buyrate for a non-major PPV. I think Backlash 2000 ended up being their second highest bought PPV that year behind only WM 2000.

Bryan losing in 18 seconds to Sheamus. The fans were pissed, but instead of Bryan getting buried, it elevated him into the beloved star of the show. While CM Punk was failing to live up to his own standard set, Bryan elevated himself to become more charismatic with Kane/Team Hell No. When CM Punk rage quit, it forced Bryan into the main event and he has become the icon CM Punk wanted to be, but never could.

WWF getting put on trial for roids the first time made Vince get rid of the big slow fukks and let Bret and Shawn shine
Owen breaking Austin's neck led to the angle where Corporate Vince didnt want him to wrestle, plus he had to resort to antics and skits which got over huge

Thinking about wrestling the other night at work, thats what i would've thought went down. Have Cena go over Barrett, then have the Nexus kick barrett out for failing. Bryan becomes leader, then it becomes Bryan vs Cena..then eventually Bryan/Barrett

Austin being out for almost year resulted in The Rock becoming the #1 guy. He probably wouldve reached top baby face status eventually but we all know how much WWF like the revolve around one guy especially during the Austin/Mcmahon feud.
