Punk had his own creative control. WWE bent over backwards for him with them getting rights to Cult of Personality, allowing him to go against creative, his own bus and allowing him with a match with Taker. The heat he lost was by himself, because he even said he wanted to leave the WWE before the pipebomb promo. As far as babyface, not a chance because of so called "metrics", the fanbase of WWE today is not just the hardcore wrestling enthusiasts but females/children/family which for Punk would NEVER happen. Cena would always be number one and Punk knew that.

Punk never really got the chance to show that he could be the number one guy, you know that. Number one HEEL, sure (and he did very well in the role), but certainly not the top guy. They took his chance away before he ever really got the opportunity to see if what you're saying about families and the like (women loved Punk, by the way. And he was so far ahead of everyone not named Cena in merch sales that it couldn't just be hardcores that bought his stuff) actually has any truth to it or not. From all the reactions, merch sales, etc., it would look as if it's closer to speculation than anything.

Thinking about wrestling the other night at work, thats what i would've thought went down. Have Cena go over Barrett, then have the Nexus kick barrett out for failing. Bryan becomes leader, then it becomes Bryan vs Cena..then eventually Bryan/Barrett

I just saw it as they've been on the same path for awhile..Wade's push was originally bigger but before Bryan got fired, he was definitely that second top guy in Nexus. I mean..had things stayed organic, Wade would of became WWE champion long ago and Bryan was meant to blow up after WM 28 in Miami. It should of always been that way.

Austin being out for almost year resulted in The Rock becoming the #1 guy. He probably wouldve reached top baby face status eventually but we all know how much WWF like the revolve around one guy especially during the Austin/Mcmahon feud.

Rock was getting higher rated segments and was blowing away everyone merchandise wise and fans were treating the rest of the show as below Rock segments. He wasn't going anywhere from the top no matter what. They already ran back to him by Unforgiven and inserted him into the Cripple/Austin hijinks at No Mercy.

Come on with this intellectually dishonest question, you know that he didn't start closing shows consistently until they turned him heel. When he was a face, he was treated as Cena/Rock's understudy. It's the top belt, yeah, but it's not being given the chance to be the top guy.

Punk gets those chants because he quit and fans think their sticking it to the WWE by chanting for him. Why chant for Bryan when he's injured? That's like saying Taker isn't over because fans don't chant for him all year around when they know he's coming back during WM season.. just doesn't make any sense.

The fact remains that the last image of Punk in the WWE is 15,000 fans no selling him getting screwed out of the rumble and chanting for Bryan instead.
