Syria is just a proxy. The chemical attacks are being done so that the American people get angry with Russia so that we can have a direct war with them.
The American public won't just agree to war with Russia right now. They know that is a big time power and would cost a lot of lives. Basically what our government is doing is creating Russia into a big enough boogeyman so that the American public calls for war against Russia. Same thing happened with Iraq. Government lied about WMDs and the connection with Bin Laden so that the American public would support war against Iraq.

Putin is too smart to let this situation escalate into WW3. Syria is important because Russia wants to build a pipeline through it to delivery its oil to European markets.
Russia knows it can't go toe to toe with the US militarily (hence why they have resorted to informational warfare). So if Trump shows no signs of backing down from this Syria situation then Russia/Putin will compromise.
Perhaps team up with the US to take down Assad and replace him with another puppet. Puppets are expendable.
