how did pittsburgh make this category?
its easy as hell to avoid the hood areas there and the cost of living is dirt cheap.
I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and lived there for the majority of my life.
Sure, the cost of living is dirt cheap...but you're paying next to nothing for next to nothing.
There's nothing do there and absolutely no jobs unless you're in sports, medicine/healthcare, or banking. All the other jobs left when the steel industry died out for good in the 80s and the population of Pittsburgh has been in freefall ever since. Pittsburgh is up there in population decline next to Detroit and New Orleans.
Pittsburgh is home to the least diverse metro area in the US and the poorest black community in the whole country (this is a fact). It's also been used as a textbook example of hyper-segregation. It's a real shytty place for minorities in general, but black folk have it terrible there.
Pittsburgh is also home to the oldest population in America.

Not to mention, the actual infrastructure of the city is really worn down. Pittsburgh is the second most poorly constructed city in the country. The streets are ridden with potholes. In NY, atleast when construction happens and they set a date for it to be finished...it's finished by that date. There are bridges (like the 31st street bridge) that have been closed for construction for years and I have my doubts when they'll ever be finished...if they'll ever be finished.
Don't even get me started on how bad Pittsburgh traffic is for a city of it's size and how terrible public transportation is. The city has a subway, but that's only to get to all of the sports stadiums (that the city is still in debt from years later) for the game!
I can't even forget how numerous city schools (Peabody HS, Arsenal, Schenley HS) have been closing down one after the other so kids have no choice but to travel out into the suburbs just to get an education. And that's spurred a really classist/racist vibe within the school system.
The only option I had living there was to go to college there, graduate, and leave immediately...just like all my friends did. I can't knock Pittsburgh's schools and access to healthcare, but that argument and talking point gets really old when there's nothing else to back it up.

My mom's from Centreville so she liked the small town, country living. Not me. And its sad how hopeless people look over there with the drugs taking over. I was ready to get the fukk outta there after three days. If the Summer Olympics wasn't going on and I didn't have my Ric Flair book, I would've lost my mind.
