I never understood why so many kids major in "Communications". Is it supposed to be easy or some shyt?
Sometimes i feel like it's one of those majors where after you've been in school for 6 years taking bullshyt easy classes and suddenly need to graduate so a counselor just looks at all the useless classes on your transcript that didnt teach you much skills and goes:
"Well we can fit those into a Communications degree curriculum and you'll walk/graduate next friday"
And the student does a fist-pump /shimmy and walks in graduation day

EDIT: no disrespect to anyone with a communications degree, BTW.

I wouldn't even deal with medical school unless I knew 100% I was gonna finish it. I'm terrible at math and that relates to science, I can't even do stem, I highly doubt I could do anything medical.

No way I could take out a 100k+ loan to see if I can do it. I need to be 100% certain I can do the course work.

I don't want to even imagine what people do when they drop out of medical school and have to pay 100k+ loans.

Hella loans. But you have to look at it as a capital investment. Yes she came out with $200k+ in loans but after residency she's making $500k replacing kneecaps all day long.

What jobs are these usually ?

I was about to list a number of them, but I think the quickest way to put it is most entry-level jobs prefer, if not outright require, a bachelor's degree. In the preference case, relevant work experience is usually the exemption (knowing management is another).

To be a little more specific B2B sales, HR departments, secretarial staff positions (especially govt) tend to be that way, especially in cities that are Columbus tier and higher. Also keep in mind that with the influx of graduates every winter and spring, it's not really hard to hold to that standard.

Oldhead history. Back before everyone could get a degree whites would send their dumbass kids to school to get any old degree and struggle graduate with a C-. Degrees were like an economic "grandfather clause." Only whites could afford to get them, so if you had one that was a license to jump over anyone else in the workforce who didn't have one.

My friend graduated back in the day with a Music degree. Came out and got an assistant manager job at a grocery store making REALLY good money (not sure if they pay as well as they used to).

Fast forward to the last 20 years now with grants, loans and whatnot minorities and women are showing up to the party. Now, if you need a manager, you have no excuse to ignore the black candidates with management degrees. Now, I think degrees are all valuable but the "any degree" cheat code doesn't work anymore.

If you are majoring in communications as an undergrad stepping stone to get into law-school, then fine.
But many (probably MOST) just get a B.S. in Communications and, again, didnt have a plan and just stopped there.
That's almost like declaring that your major as preMed and then never going to Medical-school. Not many jobs out there that you can just get a communications degree in and hit the ground running or that someone without a degree that's been at the company for 3 years couldnt do.

I did a AS and a BS in engineering and got a decent paying job immediately before i had even graduated. It's up to me if i wanna further my career and pursue an MBA or Masters

It all comes down to what you want to do. I have a worthless major in Marketing. I received a job offer as a district manager with the chain Aldi right out of college with $80k starting pay and a company car. I seen a bunch of jobs that were $50k+ that just required a Bachelor's degree and didnt specify what major.

school/connections matters heavily in these instances. i know first-hand.

you know how many humanities majors i know from harvard/yale/princeton/stanford who've finessed into management consulting or i-banking solely from the name brand value of their B.A.?


y'all gon' learn how the world works if you don't already...

It really comes down to who you know and a lot of people don't get this concept at all.

This current time project I'm working on got a night eating diced pineapples and crab meats ....not because of what I know (I do know my stuff) ..but because of a meeting and me impressing an old guy who was like Imma put you on

How do you recommend to make connections ? Frats ?

I was planning on joining some groups, not really about that frat life.

Frats are good if you're gonna actually use the connection that they can provide and not only as an excuse to party. You can also see if your major has a professional Fraternity. Career fairs, talking to teachers, check for companies visiting campus just anything that'll get you shaking hands and exchanging business cards.

Man I remember in my campus newspaper there was an article that slighted communications majors. Man ppl were upset!!! esp my roommate...why I don't know because he said himself it was easy lol
