It's hard to say because there's other things to take into consideration. Like the black face shyt. The tuna sandwich video. Getting (or rumored to have been) peed on.

So I dunno. There's like, 4-5 things that would've ended (or seriously derailed) any other rappers career. Like I said, dude has been given more passes than literally anyone else in the history of rap.

What's crazy is I liked him around the time of "So Far Gone".

Nelly does have a classic with Country Grammar but they're in that same lane. Nelly tried lots of styles, Drake does too. Neither can freestyle but at least Nelly writes his own shyt. Drake didn't grow up in the culture either but he is just a modern day Nelly. That commercial /pop lane and isn't in the Nas type category,

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Nelly didn’t write all of his shyt for two main reasons

1. His rap style is very similar to the St Lunatics, and they’re all just as good as each other when it comes to lyrics

2. Nelly was all about helping his crew out. Once it became clear that the label wasn’t going to push Ali and Murphy anymore, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nelly got them to write some shyt, just to share some profits.

Maybe cause he’s been the soundtrack to my generation but he was already in my top 10 before he got exposed So Far Gone, Take Care, NWTS and IYRTITL are either classics or near classics. Plus his unreleased content that was ultimately Care Package is a classic.

He’s still one of the GOAT’s in terms of impact but I have to put him in the same category as Kanye & Diddy.
