I think this is a question that'll really be answered once he eventually retires and the dust settles, unless he's like Hov and Nas where he keeps going well into his 40s.

The ghostwriting stuff is something only the culture itself would care about, those who really talk about legacies and stuff like that. Average music listeners don't care because to them, it's not that deep. But you ask any rapper that raps competitively if he'd want to be accused of having ghostwriters, and you'll know what's up.

Hell, that rapper might even swing on you for asking such a crazy hypothetical. :heh:

Look when it came out that Kanye didn't write Violent Crimes on Ye, people felt weird about it. How do you have such a personal song on an album, and those words didn't even come from you? It matters to people. Now, whether that makes a song still hit or not, that's on the individual, but people DO care depending on the artist. Try telling Mainstream America that Eminem or Kendrick doesn't write their raps, and you'll see how they get.

Even in a pop star lane, people respect the singer who writes. Taylor Swift for example, her ENTIRE image is based off the small-town country girl that wrote songs in her bedroom. You know how many girls identified (and still do) with that? Imagine if it were revealed that she didn't write any of those songs. Max Martin or some other big producer did. People would flip.

Drake definitely wants to be seen as a dude who writes and can make hits for the Spotify playlists. But whether the culture will overlook the ghostwriting thing or not, it's up in the air. But if they do, then the term "lyricist" has to stand out even further on its own, because it's only fair. Like what Royce said, you can't be a Top 10 Rapper or Lyricist if you didn't pen every verse you claim you wrote.

If the rules change because of Drake though, then that's the new normal. But one thing is for sure, you can't deny the man's impact. We'll just have to see how people feel when that day comes.

I can't justify putting him over Kanye. We're talking Kanye. The same guy who beat 50 and was consistently dropping classic after classic . Kanye's run was crazy.

I felt he was on his way. Was very impressed at his "pen game" and was proud at how far he came since Room For Improvement.

But after the exposal I feel he can still write but he can't be added to the 10 "emcee" list. He's on the "rapper" list with Kanye who doesnt write his shyt either

Nah. Nikkas like Nelly and Drake are popular and when the dust settles both sold millions, dropped some classic tracks but they just not in the discussion for GOAT MCs. He needed a Blackberry to drop a freestyle.... Which he still fumbled. They have their lane and made millions and fukked some bad woman so Im sure they happy with their legacies and both know they ain't in the conversation for elite MCs.
Nelly was huge but at this point Drake in diff stratosphere

Nelly comparisons don't work anymore man. Drake has been dominating music for a decade now, with next to no breaks or losses in terms of popularity. If anything he's getting more popular, which is insane.
Yeeeeep truth

Ghostwriting removed. The nikka was never THAT dope of en emcee. He was dope. But never THAT dope. For instance. At no point of his emcee career could u compare what he did on the mic to a nikka like Hov or Nas or Biggie. He didn’t have the depth of Pac. He ain’t fukkin wit someone like Redman. And the list goes on. Another thing is. His single and hits output is legendary. But none of his full albums are THAT dope like that. Not even against his peers like Cole and Kendrick. So it’s weird to rate him honestly. I think he Def belongs on a list. Just not top 10. Top 20 or 30 sounds about right.
this is about right

In terms of success, he's already cemented his legacy. The writing issue may have riled up purists and people who already didn't like but the public at large said 'so what' and moved on.

No he wouldn’t. His rhymes ain’t THAT ill and neither was his albums. Regardless. His best album barely has any rapping on it. Which is why I said it’s weird to rate him. Dude is legendary status as far as hit records and consistency. But other than that. His discography is nothing special. And his rhymes while dope aren’t some out of this world shyt. He isn’t even very creative rhyme wise. And has pretty limited depth and subject matter as well. He has great delivery. But he’s not even the most technical. He’s very witty tho.

I mean I don't disagree with you and his content is shallow but he's the biggest artist ever he got solid albums classics songs it'd be hard not to put in top 10 breh

Nah. He got hits on hits. But nikkas I consider top 10 are elite rapping with classic ALBUMS. It ain’t JUST about hits for me. And his rhymes ain’t dope enough or have the depth to be considered top 10. Top 20-30 is more suitable. Plus. Over half of his hits aren’t even rap records. And majority of his albums aren’t. I think Drake would fit more on an “Artists” list than rappers list. shyt wouldn’t be fair to the nikkas who dropped like 3 classics albums in a row. Like Cube or Redman. Or Pac. Classics bodies of work. With depth. Not just “hits” and loosies. His loosies are his best songs imo.

Can't really compare the Cube situation to Drake as Cube let Del write for him solely to put money in his pocket and give him a writing credit.

Del The Funky Homosapien Recalls Ghostwriting For Ice Cube & Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" Being His Only Platinum Record

Which is in stark contrast to Drake dropping QM like a hot potato after the Meek shyt happened.

Fred.
Props for adding context to that statement my heart went into overdrive when he said Cube had ghostwriters
