Would ‘Juice’ had been a better movie if not for the horror twist ?

This is a popular opinion but I completely disagree. Tupac’s behavior was exaggerated but I grew up with dudes who were good kids and then a year or two into high school turned into completely different people. Violent and full of rage and trying to portray something they saw on tv. I think maybe 50% of my summer basketball friends spent time behind bars and at least one committed a murder. Same kids I used to play sonic with all night and my mom would make us pancakes in the morning.

I thought it turning into a horror movie was on point because what else is the hood but an existential horror where your friends you known your whole life are turned into monsters because it’s either a monster or a victim in their eyes.

I liked it immensely as a film

That movie was trash, the acting was garbage and the way the characters were reacting to a nikka that was out here killing them one by one was ridiculous

Then it might not have been memorable.
There have been plenty of hood movie's that have come and gone that rarely get talked about anymore.
It may not be exactly in thetop five but it has definitely stood the test of time.

That's not what happened with Pac. Pac's dad was raped in prison. That's why he was basically catatonic early in the movie. Pac saw his dad pretty much lose himself after that. Pac was being teased about it. The movie was about manhood. He wanted to prove himself a man by doing shyt like robbing stores and getting into fights. The gun represented manhood and power. It's why he didn't want to give it up. Giving up the gun was giving up his manhood and power over his life. Killing Raheem and the store owner made him feel powerful. Like he was in control. It's why he kept killing. He killed his bully. But that shyt didn't fulfill him in the end. Q and Steel began avoiding him. He had the gun, he had the power but it didn't get him shyt. He was still the same person.

The first half of the movie with the music, DJing competition, and some of the things the group was doing kept things energetic and fun. After Raheem dies it's like the movie became a whole other film.

For me Juice is similar to New Jack City, both classics but, the first half of these movies are good with lots of energy but then after a character with screen presence dies (Raheem and Pookie) the movie just feels dull afterwards.

One of the reasons why both of these movies, I don't watch often but, just once in a blue moon. A lot of people think Juice is Pac's best acting role but I think his performances in Gang Related and Gridlock'd show the best of where his movie career could've gone .

Not dullness, it's sadness/depression. That's what makes them great films in the first place, because you felt the loss of an important character.

This is true and i get what OP is saying. I used to watch the beginning up until that point and then turn it off because it became too real. Young nikkas die everyday B but to go from light to dark in one movie was a lot and not something i want to revisit multiple times but it did solidify Pac.

If they didnt do the switch i think it wouldve still been a classic if it wouldve ended with them at a block party vibing with omar spinning the tunes

They should’ve just made a coming of Age Harlem movie with some street shyt. Prolly only Radames ends up getting clapped or Raheems baby mama new boyfriend
