It was meant to be on the soundtrack, people thought so cause 1. It was the first song on the soundtrack. 2. Austin was in the fukking video and 3. the whole song was in Austin Powers format
. It was also meant to be included on her album, but the album was delayed and it was included as a bonus track or something. The music industry will always try to find synergies, they would've put Bonnie and Clyde on her album too if the timing was right. They'd even put her first song with Amil on there. As Austin Powers was bigger in some countries, and consequently he song, they put the song on the album in some countries. Have you even seen the Matrix? Zee had like no lines at all, she wasn't gonna play Neo or Trinity. You really think white boys who love Matrix were gonna say damn I need to go back and get that Lil Mo and Aaliyah now. Aaliyah had #1 songs in the US and world, if you weren't convinced by then, being the 23rd actor on the Matrix damn sure wouldn't

Rich Harrison was NEVER exclusively Amerie's producer though. Amerie wasn't necessarily jacked by her label. She had weak follow-up singles. Beyonce had THREE other records that sounded NOTHING like "Crazy In Love" that were smash hits: "Baby Boy", Me, Myself, and I", and "Naughty Girl".

They both would have co existed but Aaliyah would've still been very big as she was slated to be in several movies such as The Matrix which would have certified her A list status as everyone knows of the matrix. The crossover into acting would've helped her have more relevancy.

Look at Aaliyah's sales in 2001. She already hit her peak and was on the downswing of her career. She was struggling to go gold in an era where everyone was selling platinum plus. Her lead single for her album that year peaked at at #59 on Billboard which was horrible for an artist of her caliber. Meanwhile Beyonce was killing it with Destiny's Child. You can make the argument that she was already bigger than Aaliyah at that point.
