That "lack of soul" criticism of Beyonce is really kinda bullshyt. She has a lot of soulful material in her discography. The fact of the matter is thats not what you are going to hear. The masses want to hear Single Ladies and Freakum Dress. So thats what get played 1000 times a day.

Basically...

And it's not that THAT stuff doesn't have soul either... white artists have been copyin' black people so much, we sometimes forget that even the poppiest acts are borrowin' from R&B. So when we do stuff that's not exactly deep soul, it gets confused with tryin' to cross over. I don't see Beyonce singin' Miley Cyrus type songs.

Especially bullshyt considering the context is a comparison to fukking Aaliyah...people bringing up "soul" like Aaliyah's airy ass vocals invoked the spirit of aretha and shyt :heh: ... imagine for a second what a live rendition of "At Last" by Aaliyah would sound like

it's a muhfukka what nostalgia can do to folks

^nostalgia and revisionist history seeing that beyonce was already bigger than aalyiah before she died.

aalyiah wasnt even top cat in her own lane. she played 3rd fiddle to monica & brandy in the princess lane.

and lol @ the thought of aalyiah being for soulful than beyonce.

Aaliyah was in her own lane actually. She had her own sound when should hooked up with Missy and Timbaland on her second album and going forward. Unlike Brandi and Monica she took the singing/dancing to another level.. Groups were biting Aaliyah hard too including Olivia when she first came out.

Again.. Aaliyah was going to take the acting to the next level. She was supposed to be in the Matrix and was going to be doing big things on film. Timbaland and Missy would've been producing her music so she would've still made classic music as well.

Exhibit A of chicks biting Aaliyah after she first came out.

Gyrl - Play Another Slow Jam - 1995 - YouTube

having your own style and being in your own lane are 2 different things. she was in the female teen singer lane, playing 3rd fiddle to monica & brandy. now yall are suddenly acting like she was patti labelle & aretha franklin rolled into one.

and no, she didnt have her own sound. she had r.kelly's sound. then they she went and hopped on timbaland & missy's sound when they signed to her uncle's label.

her last album wasnt making any noise until she died. i dont see how you can assume that she would still be making classic music. hell, timbaland & missy havnt been involved with classic music in YEARS themselves. and her acting career is overstated. that "queen of the damned" movie got chitted on and she was supposed to have just a small role in the matrix.

yes indeed aalyiah was influential. she just wasnt nearly as big as shes made out to be post-death.

this whole thread is off-tilt from jumpstreet considering that beyonce was already bigger than aalyiah when she was still alive. and it wasnt even a debate.

The reason her last album wasn't as hot because she was filming a movie at the same time. She wasn't competing against Brandi and Monica. And she did have her own style
