It's hard to say.

Best sample flipper is Havoc - no doubt for me.

I think Timbo, Kanye & Pharrell are perhaps the best band leaders. Dre is up there.

As a beatmaker Dilla is right up there. He was able to shift through eras.

Dre changed the game too, a couple times actually.
Wrong,it's not hard to say. The big three you named are legends and favs of mine. Tim and pharrell are clearly not the best "hip hip producer" can't recall either producing a classic hip hip album. Kanye has never introduced us to anyone of greatness in hip hop. Dre has countless classic albums and 3 dynasties under his belt. And his classics can't be disputed

Maybe Lord Willin' by The Clipse. Maybe

However, The Neptunes and Timbaland came from under R&B and New Jack Swing guys. So, their music was always diverse across genres. Pharrell's first hit as a songwriter "Rump shaker" and The Neptunes produced Blackstreet and SWV records prior to really getting into hip-hop. Being diverse has been their weight in gold.

he was in the world class wreckin' crew and produced there, then broke new ground with n.w.a. and produced all those ruthless albums durin' his time on the label, then popularized a new sound with the chronic and doggystyle and had a label with death row records, then left there and formed his own label and came back and helped put eminem on the map with a new album himself (chronic 2001)

dr. dre done flipped the script like 3 times in hip hop

what other producer can really say they've had the run he has?

would you say he's the greatest?

IMO he is. You mentioned alot of his later stuff but during that NWA era leading into Death Row he was already up there with Marley Marl. You knew when Dre was on there you were getting something dope. When Deep Cover dropped people knew what was up. There's alot of great producers...Primo, Rza, Timbaland, .... the main thing with Dre is he changed his sound and when he did it changed the game each time. I'd say the least impactful album he put out was Compton. Think he just enjoyed making it but his world was so much bigger than music that it just wasnt the same focus.

dre is the only conceptual producer in rap

there's some exceptions, but everybody else just makes beats and throws them together

I get what you are saying.. but, its really not possible to say that about beats. Concepts are lyrically driven breh

Don't know if you'll agree, but Hell Hath No Fury by The Clipse is considered classic by many on here. I like it, but I still feel Lord Willin' is the better album and had a bigger impact.
fukk no,neither are anything special as at all

:why:

That's because coming up with a concept is the job of an executive producer.

Still, when it comes to "regular" producers he's joined by:

Madlib
MF DOOM
J Dilla
RZA
EL-P
Q-Tip
Earth tone 3/the dungeon family
Timbaland
The Bomb Squad.
Etc, etc, etc

I do not think he is. He is one of the greatest. Should be in the top 5 no doubt. Not the single greatest.

He has everyone beat on longevity and being able to develop some of the greatest talent. He reminds me of Phil Jackson. Great overall vision, gets the most out of the people he works with, great master mind but raw ability and other aspects? He has leaned on others much like PJ did with Tex Winters. Big Hutch would be the Tex Winters in all of this giving him the framework that blew him up. He has had others around him to help mix records and DOC has coached MCs on Dre's behalf many times.

He should get credit for navigating the waters, handling his business, his longevity, and his ability to spot talent not just in rappers but in the people he put around himself (DOC, Mel Man, Hi Tek, etc) He doesn't deserve all the credit though.
