Sumthin happened a few years ago while working at the new york times. I can't remember what tho. This is this chick's 3rd time trying to breaking a story and each time it led to her getting forced out of her position. This time it's for a blog she writes.

I think stalking A-Rod got her dismissed from Sports Illustrated but I'm not sure

NCAA president Mark Emmert on Auburn allegations: 'What that is is a newspaper story. That's it." | al.com

ATLANTA, Georgia -- NCAA president Mark Emmert defended his organization's knowledge of the allegations presented in a report by Selena Roberts that Auburn committed multiple NCAA violations while the NCAA was investigating the school.

Roberts' report, which was later contested by former Auburn players who said their quotes in the story were either wrong or taken out of context, alleged that Auburn committed academic fraud, recruiting violations and offered cash incentives to players to return to school.

Asked about the report in his annual Final Four press conference, Emmert said the allegations have to meet a larger burden of proof at the NCAA.

"First of all, I think it's very important to recognize in that case at Auburn, what there is is a newspaper story. That's it," Emmert said. "We haven't done anything with that case because we don't know anything about it."

Emmert's comments on the report came as something of a surprise.

Earlier in the day, NCAA spokeswoman Emily Potter responded to a request from AL.com for comment by saying the organization does not comment on current, pending or potential investigations.

Several of the allegations outlined by McNeil in the Roberts report occurred during a 13-month period when the NCAA was investigating Auburn surrounding Cam Newton and four former players who accused the school of providing extra benefits in an HBO report.

Ultimately, the NCAA found no wrongdoing in those two cases after interviewing more than 80 people.

Asked specifically if he was concerned that a "newspaper reporter" -- Roberts' article was on the website Roopstigo.com -- knew more than his enforcement staff, Emmert responded strongly.

"So you obviously believe that those allegations are true and you have evidence that they're true and you're saying, Okay, here's the facts, so why don't you throw the book at Auburn?" Emmert said. "We have a higher responsibility when we're saying somebody's committed some offense than reading a newspaper story. I mean, obviously when anything like that comes out, we conduct an investigation and look into it."

Emmert indicated that at this point, the NCAA had very little information on the allegations in Roberts' report, saying those allegations came from one player -- Mike McNeil -- who hadn't contacted the NCAA.

"First of all, let me be clear about what I said. We don't know anything about that situation, not about anything that's going on at Auburn University," Emmert said. "I've read the first report, the first news story. As I understand it, a former student-athlete made some comments to a reporter. You guys probably know the story better than me. Is that about accurate?"

Emmert, who has been under fire for the NCAA's problems investigating Miami, went further with his answer in a sometimes contentious press conference.

"That person didn't call us. He called a reporter," Emmert said. "Okay. I don't know how you would expect us to have known more about that case than whatever this young man said to a reporter. That's, again, hardly shocking."

Mark Emmert -- an old friend of Nick Saban's -- named NCAA president | al.com

Pay attention, Alabama fans, and not just because it's the NCAA we're talking about.

The man who steps into one of the most powerful roles in collegiate sports just happens to be an old friend of Crimson Tide football coach Nick Saban.

Emmert formerly served as chancellor at LSU and was the responsible for hiring Saban as the Tigers' football coach in 2000. This 2004 story from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer goes into more detail of the relationship between the two men.
