He traded everything -- his friends, his family, his identity, his body, ultimately his humanity -- in pursuit of basketball immortality. His entire career was built upon accepting nothing. After he ruptured his Achilles, he looked Lakers trainer Gary Vitti in the eye and asked whether he could still play. When he tore his right rotator cuff, he just started shooting left-handed. Vitti and Lakers coach Byron Scott had to yank him out of the game. When questioned why he'd do such a thing, he defiantly responded, "Why? God gave us two hands

Kobe has been giving advice to everyone during his farewell tour. He'll write messages on shoes to any player with the balls to ask him. After games, he'll invite players to the training room and dole out advice while he's soaking his feet in a bucket of ice water. It took over an hour for him to meet everyone after the Lakers' final game in Phoenix last month. A bunch of baseball players in town for spring training came to see him. Players from the Arizona Cardinals showed up. Then some of the Suns made their way over. In all, Kobe did about 80 meet-and-greets. Guys like Mike Trout and Larry Fitzgerald all waited their turn like little kids in line at the mall to meet Santa Claus.

Lol. No you choose Shaq. You always choose Shaq.

For the same reason they referenced in that Magic Moment documentary:

It's easier to find another SG who could be Penny, but you'll never find another Shaq
:ehh:
Shaq hasnt carried a franchise since the Lakers or been relevant since 06 Heat though. Meanwhile, how many billions of dollars have the Lakers touched in the last 10yrs with Kobe?
It was a business move moreso than a basketball move that I totally understood Buss's reasoning behind. If you can't keep both, keep the one that makes you more money.

Penny and Shaq were the same age. Penny was actually older. Shaq at the end of his Lakers era was 32, Kobe was 26. You run with Kobe.

It took Pau Gasol to win 2 titles in the last 13 years. One against a (relatively weak) Magic team. The other in 7 games against an aging Celtics team.

I don't understand the logic of some stans here.

Are you fans of Kobe and pushing for him to personally enrich himself? Or are you fans of the Lakers who want to see your team win?

Winning makes money so I don't see how anyone could argue against Shaq. And they arguably would have been much more competitive in this mid 2000 years.

The last 3 years of Lakers teams have been the 3 worst Laker teams of all time. Consider how bad that is. So when I ask "was it worth it?", are Laker fans happy that Kobe is super rich and the Buss family is super rich and the franchise is in shambles from a competitive point of view?

Is that worth one 60 point game that you've all been in your feelings over in the last week?

Different situations. Shaq and Penny were pretty much the same age(24) when they let him walk to the Lakers. Shaq was 31 and had shown signs of breaking down when he got traded to the Heat and Kobe was 25.
