Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
I just stumbled across this wall of text that mentions the gentrification that's happened in Detroit.

It says that the power company, DTE, not only stopped serving the black / poor area all together, but they pulled their light poles out the ground in those neighborhood.

By contrast, in the downtown swanky spot of town, they're (DTE) funding public safety programs.

Not only did DTE cut the power to street lights in Highland Park, it sent out workers to physically dig up and remove nearly 1,000 light-poles from the neighborhood. Highland Parkers now live in permanent, debt-induced darkness. Six miles away, in Detroit’s rapidly gentrifying downtown area, DTE Energy runs a very different public policy. The same company that repossessed 1,000 streetlights from Highland Park, condemning its residents to permanent darkness, has recently launched a pro-bono security program in the increasingly white area.

But wtf is really going on? How can I get upset about Dan Gilbert going in and buying up cheap property and revitalizing it? What happened to the local governments of Detroit brehs?

Despite what you think about the changes, no matter how it happens, Detroit is a city that deserves to be saved. It's one of the centers for America's culture, it saved the country back during the civil war (arguably), it saved the entire world twice with its vaunted manufacturing capabilities during World Wars I and II, and everyone I've met from there has honestly been just plain cool to be around. I actually hope to visit one day. Detroit firing on all cylinders and being restored to its former glory would make me really happy to see.
The problem with gentrification is that the areas never are restored to its former glory but are now a hipsters paradise with expensive specialty stores.

all I can say is thank god my mom bought some properties in the 90's & early 2000's. Getting a home in any decent area in any big city seems virtual impossibility for young people these days...
