...i always felt 'the cloud' was a luxury but people seem to be implying it is a necessity...
The cloud is actually a very cost effective means of data storage and does offer the possibility of really expansive gaming. However, cloud gaming is not entirely compatible with the current means of game distribution (physical discs). This is why MS opted for always online. They had a few choices on how to introduce cloud gaming.
1. They could have kept digital and physical gaming separate but offer both in the Xbox One. This would have allowed time for people to transition to digital gaming but would also mean that physical games would not as easily be able to access the cloud or have all the functionality that digital games would have. This would have demonstrated the benifits of digital over physical and enticed rather than forced. This option gives consumers the greatest power; choice.
2. They could have choose to make it a completely online system and made all game sales digital. Since this is their end game this would have cut to the chase and according to Xbots they theoretically would have been able to offer games at low low prices. This would also offer the most straightforward means of accessing cloud benifits.
3. They could offer physical distribution but require games to be uploaded to the console so that they essentially become digital and have access to the benifits of digital gaming. This method also however destroys all the benifits of physical gaming. No more offline, no more gaming sharing, selling, trading, swapping of physical copies. Basically its an attempt to cripple physical gaming instead of just making digital appealing and giving consumers the power to choose what suits them best. But I guess they have given a choice, and the choice is "if you don't like it, fukk you, get a ps4"
