I'd use the parallel of 88-96 being the golden era of basketball, but it doesn't mean what we're watching now is shyt.
But I do think the game being flooded with new jacks because of advances in technology has hurt the quality of mainstream music. I think anytime someone samples/incorporates a style of music where the drum/bassline isn't king, the beat itself will be lacking.
And you also have to remember the issue of clearance with samples being harder and harder.
