@Liu Kang @mbewane seems like its getting crazier every weekend. Give us some thoughts from the ground.

There's already like 2 other threads somewhere about this (if some mod could merge them...), basically yeah last saturday was total chaos on the Champs-Elysées, a lot of material damage, about 200+ arrested and I think 90 injured. Whole thing was sparked by the increase in fuel but there's a lot of resentment towards Macron, this was the final straw basically. Also it's going on in all of France, not "only" Paris. For the moment it's only on satudrays, but this morning I read that some high schools had joined the overall movement of protest (not sure if they "affiliated" themselves with the gilets jaunes though). Now the discourse has shifted on the "violence", but there's a lot of videos circulating on fb that imply some fo these "casseurs" (those people who go to demonstrations just to break stuff) are really cops stirring shyt up. Obviously it's a confusing situation, since the Gilets Jaunes movement is not hierarchical, there are no "leaders" (they did designate 8 spokepersons, who met with the government, to no avail) but they're just that, not leaders per se.

Obviously the government seems to have misunderstood how widespread the movement is, the fact that Macron went to G20 during all of this speaks volumes of the disconnect.

The way they rioting will he even last his term?

I can't remember the last time a french president didn't finish his term...the way the french system is set-up they usually change the government and hold elections for the parliament, rather than change the president, regardless of his actual popularity. Obviously the Gilets Jaunes are calling for him to resign but I doubt that'll happen. Yet, who knows. PM will probably fall though.

Its very interesting how carbon tax populism is becoming a universial issue for all Western democracies that are proposing them.

Not sure about the particulars of France's proposed levy, but in Canada a similar debate has emerged with the opponents framing it as either as a cynical cash grab, but studies have found that it will actually end up being much less regressive in the long-term:

Low-income Canadians benefit most from federal carbon tax: study - iPolitics

Have Melenchon or Le Pen succesfully co-opted the movement yet?

@FAH1223 merge this with the other threads on the protests.

They've tried but both of them have been having all kinds of issues lately. Melenchon was involved in some investigation about corruption or campaign money, while Le Pen stil is under investigation (iirc) for abusive use of EU money. So they're basically both very much part of what the Gilets Jaunes are against. Obviously you've had some racist incidents here and there, Mélenchon said he would walk with them but didn't (if I'm not mistaken), but for the moment no one has managed to co-opt the movement. A lot of media tried to frame it as being extreme-right and/or "populist", but it doesn't stick, because the issues and the people marching are very diverse, and surveys show that A LOT of people support (or at least understand) the Gilet Jaunes, even if they're not participating in the demonstrations themselves. Minorities are participating too, younger people, older people, etc...so, as far as I can say, neither Le Pen nor Mélenchon will be able to capitalize on this.

Sounds like a generally nihilistic anti-system protest mood :picard: Not good for anyone.
