If you didn't know this hashtag and the conversation around it was sparked by Elliot Rodger and his mass shooting in Isla Vista,California. Rodger, who in a recorded manifesto, blamed young women for his still being a virgin and claimed that they would "give their sex" to other men besides him. The video and shooting began a reactionary dialogue among women and men about just how women are viewed in this country here are some examples.
I read on and even had a few dialogue's with people in real life about this. Here's the thing. I couldn't help but notice that the vast majority of MEN who took issue with this were not unlike Rodger himself. Young, white, and well off. I asked the question to myself.
"Is sexual aggression something afforded to white men?"
Of all the men of color I talked to (most of which came from single mother homes) somewhat understood the plight of women. Now, I'm no feminist or male apologist but I recall many nights at frat parties and different college events where myself or others have had to step in or down right fight cats who were taking things too. Far, again these were just about all white young men. So I ask the second question...
"Why is it that young white men even feel this way if that's true?"
Not to say that white men and sexual assault are mutually exclusive but the attitude seems to tilt the scales. I don't know if a topic on this has already been made but i really think as a mostly male board, we can often make jokes and laugh about things...but how do we really CHANGE the culture?
