I knew families like this too in the 80’s. I live in central NJ 100k out here ain’t cutting it unless you live in a apt or very modest home. Then add kids on top of that! You make 100K you bring home about 70k.

In the UK the average salary for the following professions are.

GP - 60 to 90k
Accountant - 84k
Barrister - 90k

They are not professions to scoff at, yet the salary wouldn't allow the person to wild out. More so, when you throw a wife and kids into the equation.

Tuition fees, mortgage, private health care doesn't come cheap. You can cut corners on those things, but not many people with the commitment to make it that far would be happy with sending their children to government school so that they can allow their wife to do not carry her weight and brag on Instagram.
